J&K: PDP slams NC after Mirwaiz denied permission to offer father-in-law’s funeral prayers at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar

Dr. Masoodi was also the brother of National Conference (NC) leader and MLA Hasnain Masoodi.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday slammed the National Conference (NC) for its silence after authorities denied permission to Hurriyat chairman and Kashmir’s chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, to lead the funeral prayers of his father-in-law at the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar.

PDP leader Iltija Mufti expressed outrage over the decision, calling it “unfathomable and cruel.” She stated, “One assumed that after an elected government took charge, there would be some relief. Instead, their silence has emboldened the Centre’s iron-fisted policy of repression.”

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti extended her condolences to the bereaved family, saying, “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Mirwaiz sahab’s father-in-law, Dr. Ghulam Sibtain Masoodi. My heartfelt condolences to the family during this difficult time.”

A spokesman for Jama Masjid revealed that the authorities had sealed the mosque’s gates and cordoned off the surrounding area, informing the family that the Namaz-e-Janazah (funeral prayers) for Dr. Masoodi would not be permitted at the historic site. Dr. Masoodi, who passed away on Wednesday night, was scheduled to have his funeral prayers after the noon prayers on Thursday at Jama Masjid in Nowhatta, Srinagar.

“It is condemnable to use force and display power even in moments of grief and religious rituals,” the mosque spokesman said. The police’s decision forced the family to change the venue, and the funeral prayers were instead held at Masjid Wazir Mohammed Khan Bagat Barzulla at 2 p.m. The Jammu and Kashmir Police have not issued any statement explaining their decision.

Former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed his condolences, saying, “Sorry to hear about the demise of Dr. Sibtain Masoodi, father-in-law of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. May Allah grant him the highest place in Jannat. My condolences to the Mirwaiz and his loved ones.” Dr. Masoodi was also the brother of National Conference (NC) leader and MLA Hasnain Masoodi.

The ruling NC described the authorities’ decision as “deeply regrettable and wrong.” In a statement, an NC spokesman said, “Such actions are not only regressive but also expose the hollowness of claims of normalcy in the region. These steps reveal the lack of trust the authorities have in their own assertions of peace and stability. The police, in their short-sighted approach, fail to realize that restricting such basic rights only further erodes the trust and goodwill of the people.”

The incident has sparked widespread criticism, with many accusing the authorities of insensitivity and overreach.

In a unique welfare initiative, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay is set to launch the ‘Thai Maman Gold Ring Scheme’ across the state. Under this program, every child born in government hospitals will be gifted a one-gram gold ring. To fund the project, the state government has designated an annual allocation of Rs 755.83 crore.

The Chief Minister has already instructed state officials to immediately begin the tender process required to roll out the initiative.

Eligibility and official launch timeline

Children born in government hospitals on or after June 22, 2026—coinciding with the Chief Minister’s birthday—will be eligible to receive the benefit. While the eligibility begins in June, the scheme will see its formal, official launch later in the year on September 15, 2026, marking the birth anniversary of Perarignar Anna.

Cultural roots and inspiration

According to an official government release, the welfare scheme draws direct inspiration from “Thai Maman Seer,” a deeply rooted Tamil cultural tradition where a maternal uncle presents blessings and gifts to a newborn baby. Through this initiative, the state government will symbolically assume the responsibilities of a maternal uncle, presenting the one-gram gold ring as a token of care, affection, and welcome.

The administration noted that the initiative is designed to preserve and reflect Tamil cultural heritage while offering a symbol of support and love to newborns and their respective families.

From election promise to institutional welfare

The ‘Thai Maman Gold Ring Scheme’ originally formed a key component of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s election promises and was highlighted in the government’s ‘Vetri Thamizhagam Vision Document’.

While political organizations in the region have historically distributed gold rings to infants born in government facilities on their leaders’ birthdays, this initiative represents the first time the practice has been institutionalized as an official state government welfare scheme.

A petrol bomb was allegedly thrown at the clinic of BJP leader Dr Tarsem Garg in Punjab’s Bathinda, triggering panic in the area and prompting a police investigation. The incident occurred late on Monday night, just ahead of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s scheduled visit to the city.

According to preliminary information, two masked individuals were involved in the attack. CCTV footage reportedly showed one suspect lighting a bottle filled with petrol while another recorded the incident. The burning bottle was then thrown inside the clinic premises before the accused fled the spot.

Dr Tarsem Garg said he had not received any threats and was unaware of any personal enmity that could have led to the incident. Police teams reached the spot soon after receiving information and began collecting evidence. Senior officers inspected the scene and are analysing CCTV footage to identify the attackers.
