Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashes Chris Gayle’s historic record for most sixes in an IPL season

Fifteen-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has etched his name into cricket history by breaking Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for the maximum number of sixes hit in a single edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Playing for Rajasthan Royals against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the high-stakes IPL 2026 Eliminator at New Chandigarh, the young opener cleared the ropes multiple times to surpass the Jamaican legend’s 14-year-old milestone.

Before this fixture, Gayle held the all-time record with 59 sixes during the 2012 IPL season. Sooryavanshi shattered that tally during his explosive innings, taking his total count past the milestone. Acknowledging the feat, the giant screen at the stadium proudly labeled the teenager as the “Universe Baby Boss,” playing on Gayle’s famous moniker, the “Universe Boss”.

Blistering knock rewrites playoff record books

The young left-hander launched a relentless assault on the opposition bowling unit, bringing up his half-century in just 16 deliveries. This blistering effort equaled Suresh Raina’s 2014 feat for the joint-fastest half-century scored in the history of IPL knockouts or playoffs.

Sooryavanshi was eventually dismissed for a phenomenal 97 runs off just 29 balls, a knock laced with 5 boundaries and 12 massive sixes. His explosive performance came agonizingly close to breaking another iconic T20 record held by Gayle—the fastest-ever IPL century, which was scored off 30 deliveries against Pune Warriors India back in 2013. The youngster fell just three runs short of a historic hundred.

Rising star targets national call-up

During his initial powerplay blitz, the opener set a new benchmark by smashing 8 sixes in the opening six overs, overtaking previous records held by legendary hitters like Sanath Jayasuriya and Jos Buttler, who had both managed 7 sixes in the powerplay phase of an IPL innings.

With nearly 600 runs accumulated over the course of the ongoing season, the clamour to fast-track the prodigy into the senior national men’s setup has intensified significantly among fans and pundits alike. Media reports indicate that the teenager is already lined up to feature for the India-A team in an upcoming tri-series scheduled in Sri Lanka next month.

Commenting on the meteoric rise of the young batsman, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal labeled him a “special talent,” emphasizing that continuous mentorship from the board and his franchise would ensure his upward trajectory remains secure.

India began their three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe with a commanding seven-wicket victory in Harare on Thursday, thanks to a sensational batting display from teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and a disciplined effort from the bowlers.

Chasing a modest target of 126, India reached 126/3 in just 13.2 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The highlight of the match was Sooryavanshi’s blistering half-century, which made him the youngest player to score a T20I fifty.

Sooryavanshi creates history with 18-ball fifty

The 15-year-old left-hander stole the show with a fearless knock of 50 off just 19 deliveries. He raced to his maiden T20I half-century in only 18 balls, smashing four boundaries and four sixes before being dismissed by Richard Ngarava immediately after reaching the landmark.

At 15 years and 118 days, Sooryavanshi became the youngest player to score a T20 International half-century. He also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record to become the youngest Indian to register an international fifty.

His aggressive strokeplay completely shifted the momentum in India’s favour after the visitors lost an early wicket.

Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer complete comfortable chase

After Abhishek Sharma departed for one, Sooryavanshi and Ishan Kishan put India firmly in control with an attacking partnership.

Kishan continued the momentum with an entertaining 35 off 24 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes before falling to Blessing Muzarabani.

Captain Shreyas Iyer anchored the innings with an unbeaten 28 off 24 deliveries, while Tilak Varma remained unbeaten on five as India comfortably crossed the finish line with seven wickets in hand and 40 balls remaining.

India bowlers restrict Zimbabwe to 125

Earlier, India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision that paid immediate dividends.

Speedster Mayank Yadav struck with the very first ball of the innings after India successfully reviewed an edge to dismiss Brian Bennett. He later removed Dion Myers to finish with figures of 2/18.

Prince Yadav also impressed, claiming two wickets for 19 runs, including the dismissal of Ben Curran and Brad Evans.

Shivam Dube dismissed Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza, while Ravi Bishnoi ended Ryan Burl’s resistance with a well-disguised googly.

Zimbabwe struggled to recover after early setbacks, slipping to 32/4 before Wessly Madhevere and Ryan Burl stitched together a 32-run partnership.

Madhevere top-scored with 39 off 34 balls, while Burl contributed 26. However, India’s disciplined bowling and tight death overs restricted the hosts to 125/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

India take early series advantage

India’s convincing victory gives them a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series and provides captain Shreyas Iyer with a winning start to the tour.

While the bowlers laid the platform with an impressive performance, it was Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s record-breaking innings that stole the spotlight, with the teenager announcing himself on the international stage in spectacular fashion.

India have made a late change to their squad for the third and final ODI against England after all-rounder Washington Sundar was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday that left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder Harsh Dubey has been added to the squad for the series decider at Lord’s.

Washington Sundar ruled out with hamstring injury

Sundar sustained a right hamstring injury during the second ODI against England at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. The injury has forced him to miss Sunday’s decisive encounter.

According to the BCCI, the all-rounder will undergo scans and seek specialist medical opinion to determine the next course of treatment.

His absence comes as a setback for India ahead of the final ODI, with the three-match series level after England won the second match.

Harsh Dubey earns another opportunity

Harsh Dubey replaces Sundar in the Indian squad after making his ODI debut against Afghanistan in Dharamshala in June, where he returned figures of 3/47.

The young all-rounder was also part of the India A side that secured a 1-0 red-ball series victory in Sri Lanka. During the tour, he claimed four wickets and contributed scores of 30 and 29 with the bat.

Dubey joins India’s spin department alongside Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav for the Lord’s clash.

Zimbabwe assignment after England series

Following the conclusion of the England ODI series, Dubey will travel to Zimbabwe for India’s three-match series beginning on July 23 in Harare. The remaining matches are scheduled for July 25 and July 26 at the Harare Sports Club.

India’s squad for the third ODI

Shreyas Iyer calls India’s T20I struggles a transition phase after England seal series

Shreyas Iyer admitted India failed in execution after England’s nine-wicket victory sealed the T20I series, describing the current squad as one in transition.

England clinched the T20I series against India with a convincing nine-wicket victory, leaving India captain Shreyas Iyer disappointed with his team’s overall performance despite scoring an unbeaten 80.

India posted 158 for 7 after Iyer anchored the innings with the highest score. However, England made light work of the chase, reaching the target in just 13.5 overs to take an unassailable lead in the series.

Iyer rues poor execution across departments

Following the defeat, Iyer admitted India failed to execute their plans with both bat and ball.

He said 158 was not an ideal total on the board and acknowledged that England’s rapid chase reflected India’s shortcomings. According to the skipper, the bowlers were instructed to repeatedly target a difficult length around the top of middle and leg stump, but the team failed to execute those plans consistently.

Although satisfied with his personal contribution, Iyer said individual performances hold little value when the team ends up on the losing side.

He added that his priority is always to contribute to victories and expressed hope of bouncing back in the next match.

‘This is a transition phase,’ says India captain

Iyer described the current Indian side as a team in transition and stressed that mistakes are part of the learning process.

He said the players need to understand the importance of adapting quickly and expressed confidence that the squad has enough quick learners who will assess their performances and improve from the experience.

Harry Brook praises England’s adaptability

England captain Harry Brook credited his team’s success to its ability to adjust to the conditions and the communication between the players and coaching staff.

Brook said the team had enjoyed the contest and was delighted to secure the series against India. He identified adaptability and strong communication as the two biggest reasons behind England’s dominant performances.

The England skipper also praised fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue for once again making an early impact with the ball before expressing his ambition of seeing England rise to the No. 1 spot in the ICC T20I rankings.

England now have the opportunity to complete a 4-0 series sweep in Southampton on Saturday, a result that would also see them replace reigning world champions India at the top of the T20I rankings.
