There are 79 women contesting Delhi Election 2020 out of the 672 nominations filed while the combination of AAP, BJP and Congress have fielded 24 women in total.

AAP has field nine women candidates, the BJP has fielded five candidates and the Congress has fielded 10 female candidates. The number has gone up from 2015 Assembly elections in terms of total candidates fielded.

In 2015, the total number of women contesting the Assembly elections was 66 out of 660 candidates which is just 10 per cent. That percentage has gone up in 2020 at 11.75%.

AAP, BJP and Congress have also improved the share of women candidates increasing the number of candidates to 24 from 19 fielded in 2015.

The percentage of women taking part is abysmally low considering the fact that women are 45% of Delhi’s population. There are only six MLAs in the 70-seat Delhi Assembly.

Here we take a look at the some key women leaders contesting the elections:

Atishi (AAP)

Constituency: Kalkaji

Atishi is contesting her first Assembly elections, having earlier contested the Lok Sabha Polls in 2019 when she lost to BJP’s Gautam Gambhir by over 4.7 lakh votes.

She completed her graduation in History from St Stephen’s College and went on to pursue her Master’s degree from Oxford University. Atishi is credited for the reformation Delhi’s education system under the AAP government.

She is up against Shivani Chopra of the Congress and Dharamveer Singh of BJP.

She is up against Atishi of the AAP and Dharamveer Singh of BJP.

Alka Lamba (Congress)

Constituency: Chandni Chowk

Alka Lamba is the MLA having won the seat with AAP in 2015 but she is now seeking re-election after having joined Congress party. She has had a long history with the Congress party before joining AAP as she was Delhi University Students’ Union President from NSUI.

She has also been a member of All India Congress Committee. She was disqualified under the anti-defection law and expelled by the AAP. She is an alumnus of St. Stephen’s College and she first fought elections during 2003 Assembly elections against BJP’s Madan Lal Khurana but lost.

She is pitted against Parlad Singh Sawhney of AAP and Suman Kumar Gupta of BJP.

Rakhi Birla (AAP)

Constituency: Mangolpuri

Rakhi Birla is seeking her third term in the Delhi Assembly. In 2013, she became the youngest and the only woman Cabinet minister in the Arvind Kejriwal-led Assembly after she defeated local heavyweight Raj Kumar Chauhan of the Congress.

Since 2016, she is the deputy speaker of the Delhi Assembly, the youngest ever in Delhi’s history.

Arvind Kejriwal reacts to Lt Governor’s video showing Delhi’s hellish conditions

He called on the Delhi government to tackle these “hellish conditions” and emphasized the need to prioritize essential services for the local population.

Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor on Sunday released a video depicting what he described as the ‘hellish conditions’ faced by residents under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. The video highlighted significant issues including overflowing sewers, unreliable electricity supply, inadequate water access, and heaps of garbage throughout various regions of the national capital.

In reaction to the video, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal expressed gratitude to the Lieutenant Governor for drawing attention to these concerns and assured that the government would take corrective measures.

The footage shared by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena included scenes from his visits to the impacted areas, with one visit taking place the day before. He called on the Delhi government to tackle these “hellish conditions” and emphasized the need to prioritize essential services for the local population.

The Lieutenant Governor conveyed his distress at observing the dire situation of many residents, noting that each incident was detailed in tweets. He remarked that the filthy water visible on the streets was the result of overflowing sewers, not rainfall. Additionally, he mentioned that the suffering women he encountered were from Delhi, asserting that their plight was not a problem imported from elsewhere.

Saxena pointed out deficiencies in the drainage systems within the visited areas, citing narrow streets clogged with silt and dirty water. He said that poor road conditions, inconsistent electricity supply, and a critical shortage of water, which forced women to rely on infrequent tanker deliveries, occurring approximately every week.

He reassured the residents that essential services would soon be made available and announced the commencement of a cleaning initiative on Monday. Furthermore, he pledged to oversee the progress personally to ensure the community receives the necessary amenities for a decent quality of life.

“I urge the former Chief Minister, the current Chief Minister, and the relevant Ministers of the Delhi Government to visit these neighborhoods and experience these hellish conditions firsthand. Immediate action must be taken to alleviate this dire situation,” the Lieutenant Governor urged.

Kejriwal, who held the position of Chief Minister until September, expressed his appreciation to the Lieutenant Governor for emphasizing the civic issues and stated that the ongoing government, now led by Chief Minister Atishi, would address them.

“I thank the Lieutenant Governor profoundly for highlighting our shortcomings, and we commit to rectifying them,” he said. He added that work had started on the roads he had previously indicated were in disrepair and mentioned that Chief Minister Atishi would soon inaugurate these improvements. Kejriwal pledged that all areas highlighted by the Lieutenant Governor would be cleaned promptly, affirming a commitment to resolve any shortcomings that were brought to their attention.
