The Bombay High Court on Thursday agreed to hear a petition filed by Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma challenging the proceedings against her initiated by the Sales Tax Department for the recovery of tax for the years 2012-2013 and 2013-2014.

The court directed the Sales Tax Department to respond to the actor’s plea within three weeks. The Bombay High Court has also adjourned the hearing till February 6.

Anushka Sharma has now filed the petition in her own name after the court raised an objection to the petition filed earlier in her CA’s name.

Last month, the Bombay High Court dismissed the two petitions filed by actor Anushka Sharma through her taxation consultant Shrikant Velekar. The Bombay HC noted that Anushka Sharma should be the petitioner and not her CA.

The petitions were filed through Shrikant Velekar, a taxation consultant. The bench of Justices Nitin Jamdar and Gauri Godse stated that these petitions are filed by the petitioner’s taxation consultant. There is no reason why the petitioner [Anushka] cannot file these petitions on solemn affirmation. The bench further added that the writ petitions are thus dismissed, with the petitioner free to file petitions on the petitioner’s own affirmation.

Anushka Sharma in a petition said that in the years 2012-2014, she performed in films and at award ceremonies as part of a tri-party agreement with her agent, Yashraj Films Pvt Ltd, and producers/event organizers. However, the assessing officer levied sales tax on product endorsements and anchoring at award functions instead of the film.

On the work front, Anushka Sharma will be next seen in Chakda ‘Xpress, which is the biopic of cricketer Jhulan Goswami. Helmed by Prosit Roy and written by Abhishek Banerjee, the film will be released on an OTT platform.

All That Breathes

The Oscar nominee All That Breathes has finally been released in India. Shaunak Sen’s documentary was nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards and can now be seen at the OTT giant, Disney + Hotstar.

The run time of the documentary is 2 hours and it is streaming in the original Hindi-English mix only and is streaming from March 22. However, the documentary will only be available on the Disney+Hotstar platform till March 31, as it has ended its partnership with HBO as a cost-cutting measure. All the content owned by HBO will be removed from its library from April 1, 2023.

All That Breathes is about the story of two brothers, Mohammad Saud and Nadeem, who run a humble bird clinic in Delhi. They spend endless hours caring for fallen kites, helping the birds of prey to fly again. They have rescued over 20,000 injured birds in over two decades.

Shaunak Sen missed out on the Oscars and lost to Navalny but earlier he won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival and the Golden Eye Award in the Best Documentary category at the Cannes Film Festival.

A few days ago, he had reacted to this loss and said that the team was low for a while. He had taken to Instagram to share a few pictures stating it was very difficult for him to wrap his brain around the fact that it was the end of this chapter.

He also added that they are figuring out where the documentary will be streaming after it is removed from Disney+Hotstar.
