At 35, Taapsee Pannu’s off-screen life had trolls, the Ranaut and anti-CAA protest

Taapsee Pannu

As actor Taapsee Pannu turns 35 on Monday, here are a series of her off-reel moments which showed her admirable candid version in all of its glory.

Taapsee Pannu, who turned 35 on Monday, has never shied away from speaking her mind.

The star of renowned films such as Pink, Mulk, Thappad, and Pannu has not minced words despite the ramifications of trolling or what-not.

Here are some controversies that Taapsee Pannu dealt with like a boss:

On Kabir Singh

Reacting to a news story about a man murdering his girlfriend, Taapsee tweeted that maybe they were so madly in love with each other that he ended up killing the girlfriend, and called it an act of true love. This remark was met with a lot of criticism; she refuted the charge saying people with no sense of sarcasm should ignore her tweets.

The tweets were a dig at the uber-misogynistic film, Kabir Singh. She further spoke of Kabir Singh in an interview, where she said that the issue is not the flawed characters of the film but rather the glorification of their flaws.

Against the Ranauts

In 2019, Rangoli Chandel, the sister of Kangana Ranaut, launched Taapsee, saying some people are plying their business by copying Kangana and never acknowledging her for what she has done. She also spoke of Taapsee’s remark about Kangana’s need for double filters and urged Taapsee to stop being a cheap duplicate of Kangana.

Taapsee responded to Rangoli, saying she will not apologise for her honest opinion. She added she didn’t know Kangana had a patent on curly hair, implying that just because she looked somewhat like Kangana, doesn’t make her a copy. She said she is only cheap as she is not among the highest-paid actresses in the film industry.

Troll magnet

Taapsee Pannu underwent a rigorous routine to look the part for Rashmee Rocket. Though she was praised by many for her transformation, she was also body shamed by some. However, one can say Taapsee knows how to deal with insults better than compliments.

A troll had retweeted her picture from Rashmee Rocket with the remark that she looked like a man. Taapsee retweeted the abusive tweet and asked the troll to remember his words and wait for September 23 (2020) for the release of the film. She thanked him for his comment saying she worked hard for this compliment.

Taapsee Pannu and her staunch criticism of policies and government actions

Even though there aren’t many people from the film industry who come out to criticise the policies of the Central government, Taapsee Pannu has been one of the few to speak truth to power. Taapsee had strong opinions and remarks against some policies which were introduced by this government.

During the farmers’ protest, US-based popstar Rihanna tweeted in support of the farmers protesting against the now withdrawn farm laws. Many saw Rihanna’s tweet as false propaganda. Taapsee Pannu, who noted the irony, tweeted that if one tweet could rattle their (the anti-farmer lobby) unity, then it’s them who have to work on strengthening their value systems and not become propaganda tools for others.

After the Delhi Police’s violent crackdown on the students of the Jamia Millia Islamia during the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, Taapsee Pannu asked if it was the start or an end. She said the assault was setting new rules of the land and those who don’t fit in can very well see the consequences. She also said her heart and hopes were broken after watching the video and remarked on the irreversible damage it can cause.

Dhurandhar review: Ranveer Singh roars back, Akshaye Khanna shines in intense spy thriller

Ranveer Singh returns with a ferocious performance in Dhurandhar, supported by Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, and a gripping espionage storyline set against real historical events.

Dhurandhar review

Ranveer Singh makes a striking return to the big screen with Dhurandhar, delivering a fierce, layered performance in Aditya Dhar’s ambitious spy thriller. Blending historical terror incidents with a fictional revenge saga, the film explores India’s covert response to cross-border terrorism through the secret project ‘Dhurandhar’.

A brutal world built around revenge and espionage

Set around the IC-814 Kandahar hijack and the 2001 Parliament attack, Dhurandhar opens with Ajay Sanyal, an Intelligence Bureau officer played by R Madhavan, who strongly opposes releasing captured terrorists. Despite his resistance, bureaucracy prevails, setting the stage for the covert mission he later leads.

The project introduces its central weapon — Humza Ali Mazari, later revealed to be Jaskirat Singh Rangil — portrayed by Ranveer Singh with ferocity and emotional depth. Dropped straight into Karachi’s dangerous Lyari district, Humza navigates a nexus of gangs, politicians, and the ISI, with the narrative also touching upon tensions between local Pakistanis and Baloch communities.

Performances that elevate the film

Akshaye Khanna nearly steals the spotlight as a feared Lyari gangster inspired by Rehman ‘Dakait’ Baloch. Sanjay Dutt’s portrayal of SP Chaudhry Aslam brings an intimidating presence, while Arjun Rampal’s Major Iqbal leaves a lingering impact despite limited screen time.

Sara Arjun plays Yalina with conviction, and the film also features an unrecognisable Gaurav Gera in a surprise appearance.

Music, violence, and a split narrative

Shashwat Sachdev’s background score stands out, weaving classic Pakistani melodies with Indian retro hits to complement the film’s shifting tones. Viewers should be prepared for intense brutality, graphic torture scenes, and sudden shifts in narrative style — especially in a second half that feels markedly different from the first.

The episodic structure, archival footage, and mix of real and fictional characters add layers, though some may find the format distracting.

Ending that sets up part two

While the film does not end on a dramatic cliffhanger, its teaser for the second part — scheduled for March 19, 2026 — ensures audiences will return to witness the conclusion of Humza’s journey.

Slow start for 120 Bahadur on day one

De De Pyaar De 2 maintains its advantage
