The festival of Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on 26 October this year. Every year sisters especially wait for this day after Rakshabandhan. Traditionally, on this day brothers go to their sister’s place and she applies tilak, performs aarti, serves food and wishes long life for her brother. For years this tradition has been going on, but do you know why is Bhai Dooj celebrated? What is the story behind it?
History of Bhai Dooj
The story of making Bhai Dooj is related to Yamuna and Yamraj. It is said that both were siblings and were born to Lord Surya and his wife Chhaya. Sister Yamuna loved her brother Yamraj very much and often used to call him to her house, but Yamraj was unable to visit her.
Then during the Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, Yamuna took the promise from Yamraj that he would of visit her soon. And fulfilling his promise Yam did visit Yamuna. She was elated to her brother and cooked delicious food for him. When Yamraj was pleased with the hospitality he asked Yamuna to make a wish.

Yamuna took a promise from Yamraj that every year during the time of Shukla Paksha he would pay her a visit. Then Yamraj gave a lot of ornaments and clothes to the sister and said aastu. Since then this tradition is going on. On this day brothers go to their sister’s house. It is believed that by doing this, the life of brothers and sisters is prolonged.
It is also said that, Yamraj knew that he was going to lose his life and no one wanted to invite him to his home. In such a situation, even after knowing all these things, his sister repeatedly called brother Yamraj to her house considering it as his religion. During this time he also freed many people living in hell.
