Abbas Ansari, a Mau MLA and son of the late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, has been disqualified from the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly following his conviction in a 2022 hate speech case, according to reports.
Representing the Mau Assembly constituency, Abbas’s seat has now been declared vacant, according to PTI.
Abbas, a member of the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by a special MP-MLA court on Saturday, 31 May 2025.
The prosecution stated that during the 2022 Assembly elections, while contesting as an SBSP candidate from Mau Sadar, Abbas threatened the Mau administration at a public meeting on 3 March 2022 at Paharpur ground, vowing to “settle scores and teach them a lesson” post-elections.
Defence lawyer Daroga Singh told PTI that Abbas was charged under Indian Penal Code sections 189 (threatening a public servant), 153-A (promoting enmity between groups based on religion, caste, or language), 171F (undue influence in elections), and 506 (criminal intimidation).
Following arguments from both sides, Judge K.P. Singh of the special MP-MLA court convicted Abbas, sentencing him to two years each under sections 189 and 153-A, one year under section 506, and six months under section 171-F, with all sentences to run concurrently. Additionally, Abbas was fined ₹2,000.
Under the Representation of the People Act, a legislator’s membership is terminated if sentenced to two or more years’ imprisonment, leading to Abbas’s disqualification.
Elected as an MLA for the first time in 2022 from Mau Sadar on an SBSP ticket, part of the Samajwadi Party-led alliance, Abbas’s party is now allied with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition, with SBSP president Om Prakash Rajbhar serving as a Cabinet Minister in the state government.
Abbas’s father, Mukhtar Ansari, a long-time representative of Mau Sadar, was a prominent political figure until his death from a cardiac arrest in March 2024 while incarcerated in Banda district jail.
