Because April falls on the Hindu calendar’s first month, Chaitra, you’ll see a lot of regional new year festivals in this list.

With the country relishing in the afterglow of winters, flowers blossoming, and a beautiful cultural vibe check, April brings in the harvest season. The first week of the month is all about new beginnings, with many communities celebrating New Year’s Day on April 2. The Muslim holy month of Ramadan, as well as the auspicious nine-day festival of Chaitra Navratri, will begin on April 2.

On the same day, Maharashtrians and Konkanis will celebrate Gudi Padwa, which is the first day of the New Year. Additionally, for the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka, the first Saturday of the month will also be the first day of the New Year, known as Ugadi. The Sindhi community on the same date will celebrate the birth anniversary of their patron saint Jhulelal which is also the first day of New Year for them known as Cheti Chand.

Festivities are in air as Muslims gear up to celebrate the special occasion, eagerly anticipating the joyful reunions with family and friends, the delectable feasts shared with loved ones, and the heartfelt prayers offered in gratitude for the blessings of the past month.

Every Muslim household is decorated beautifully with lanterns, twinkling lights and flowers on this day with people dressing up in their best of clothes to meet relatives and friends and wish them Eid Mubarak! Not to mention the elaborate meal spread consisting of biryani, haleem, kebabs, sheer khurma, meethi sevaiyan that will be enjoyed with family, served to guests and also distributed to poor and needy. Children of the household receive Eidi, a gift or cash from elders in the family.
