Ashok Gehlot expresses concern over increasing cases of student suicide in Kota
Drawing from his personal experiences, Gehlot shared how he had once aspired to become a doctor during his childhood, dedicating late hours to studying. Despite not achieving success in that endeavor, he maintained his optimism and eventually embarked on an alternative path, leading him to become a social worker and politician.

Ashok Gehlot, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, has expressed deep concern regarding the escalating instances of student suicides in Kota. Speaking at the inauguration of the state-level Yuva Mahapanchayat in Jaipur on Saturday, CM Gehlot highlighted that within the past eight months, 20 students have tragically taken their lives. He emphasized the gravity of this issue and urged parents not to exert excessive pressure on their children to pursue a specific field of study or college.
Gehlot further recounted his journey, detailing his role as a minister, his work at the national level, and his three terms as chief minister.
Earlier, on August 8, Sushil Kumar Modi, a Member of Parliament from the Bhartiya Janata Party, also expressed concerns about the increasing rate of student suicides. He raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha, highlighting that in 2021 alone, there were 10,732 reported cases of suicides among students under the age of 18, indicating a 4.5% rise from the previous year. Additionally, over the past five years, 75 students have tragically ended their lives in esteemed institutions such as IIT, IIM, and AIIMS. This alarming trend is one that requires serious attention.
In Kota, more than 15 suicides have been reported this year alone. CM Gehlot explained that these distressing statistics reflect the intense mental and physical stress that students endure due to the highly competitive environment prevalent in medical and engineering examinations. He strongly urged the Central government to proactively initiate measures to bolster mental health support within coaching institutes, schools, and universities. Addressing this pressing issue is crucial to safeguard the well-being of young students who face immense pressure and challenges in their pursuit of education
