In a sharply worded letter, former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has called on newly sworn-in Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to address what she describes as a broken promise made by the BJP government. The commitment, made during the recent election campaign, was to roll out a financial assistance scheme offering Rs 2,500 per month to women across the city—a promise that has yet to materialize.
Unmet assurances and growing dissent
Atishi’s letter, directed to Ms. Gupta shortly after her induction on February 20, criticizes the government’s failure to implement the promised scheme during its inaugural cabinet meeting. The former chief minister reminded the new administration of assurances given by top BJP leaders during a January 31 rally, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pledged immediate action on the initiative.
According to Atishi, the scheme was intended to benefit the mothers and sisters of Delhi, ensuring a steady monthly deposit by March 8. However, the BJP-led government’s first cabinet session approved other measures, such as the implementation of a national health insurance plan and discussions on a different women-centric initiative, while the Rs 2,500 scheme was notably absent from the agenda.
Political fallout and electoral promises
The fallout from this apparent oversight is significant. At a press conference, Atishi questioned whether the promise was merely an electoral gimmick, accusing the government of misleading voters during a hard-fought election. Highlighting the stark contrast between campaign assurances and actual policy decisions, she stressed that the unmet commitment has left many women feeling deceived.
The issue has intensified political tensions in Delhi, with the BJP securing a decisive victory in the February 5 elections and replacing the previous administration. Meanwhile, the opposition has vowed to hold the new leadership accountable for delivering on electoral promises, ensuring that the voices of women, who played a critical role in the campaign, are not sidelined.
A call for immediate action
Atishi has urged Chief Minister Gupta to convene a meeting with an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delegation this coming Sunday to discuss concrete steps toward implementing the promised financial aid. The confrontation reflects broader concerns over the government’s commitment to public welfare programs—a topic that continues to resonate with voters and political observers alike.
