Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann’s free Gurbani telecast move creates stir, SGPC, Akali Dal say don’t interfere in religious matter
According to the Chief Minister, it will allow people to watch Sri Harmandar Sahib on their televisions and other electronic devices.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his cabinet is going to formalise the idea to make Gurbani broadcasts from Amritsar’s Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) free. The decision was announced in a tweet by Chief Minister Mann today, who believes that everyone has a right to Gurbani and that it should be provided without charge.
Taking to Twitter, the cm tweeted, with the blessings of God, they are going to make a historic decision tomorrow. He said, as per the demand of all devotees, the telecast of Gurbani from Harminder Sahib will be free for all, no tender will be required. They are adding a new clause to the Sikh Gurdwara Act 1925, tomorrow June 20, in the cabinet, a vote will be taken in the state assembly, according to his tweet.
According to the Chief Minister, it will allow people to watch Sri Harmandar Sahib on their televisions and other electronic devices.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandhak Committee, or SGPC, the highest governing organisation of the Sikhs, has granted the PTC network, headed by the politically powerful Badal family, the right to broadcast Gurbani from Harmandir Sahib. It is anticipated that making it free will end the network’s monopoly and level up the competition for all television networks.
The SGPC and Akali Dal strongly opposed CM Mann’s prior proposal to make Gurbani telecasting free.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann ji should not try to confuse the religious matters of Sikhs, SGPC head Harjinder Singh Dhami said in a statement. He also said, don’t mix your political interests with those of the nation. The holiness and ethics of Gurbani broadcasting should not be overlooked since it is not a typical broadcast.
The move was referred to as unconstitutional and direct interference in the religious activities of the Sikh community by Daljeet Singh Cheema of the Akali Dal.
The BJP and the Congress too opposed this decision, saying that the Sikh Gurdwara Act of 1925 is a piece of legislation passed by Parliament that the state government cannot alter.
Sukhpal Singh Khaira of the Congress questioned how the Punjab government could alter federal law.
However, Congress’ Navjot Sidhu, supported the decision. He said it is a commendable effort by CM Bhagwant Mann.
