Covid-19: Amid Omicron surge, centre warns states to amp up monitoring of international travellers, raises alarm over declining mask usage

The coronavirus outbreak does not appear to be slowing down any time soon. With the emergence of the highly contagious Covid variant, Omicron, the country is hustling to control the cases. Currently, the number of Omicron cases in India has now reached 25. The government is making significant efforts to prevent the third wave, as the number of cases is currently exceeding the number of cases recovered on a daily basis.

ICMR on Covid-19 situation in India

Balram Bhargava, DG, ICMR, said that regular meetings are being held to maintain track of global scenarios as well as the Covid situation in India, with an emphasis on Omicron. We need assistance in order to avoid spreading panic. He further added that the limitations at the district level would be applied when positivity exceeds 5 per cent.

Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry said that surveillance, effective screening, monitoring of international travellers and health infrastructure upgradation is being done. States have been warned to amp up their monitoring and actively test travellers arriving from other nations.

Adding further he said that the overall positivity rate stood at 0.73 per cent in the country last week. Less than 10,000 daily cases in the last 14 days. Active cases are highest in two states- Kerala and Maharashtra with over 43 per cent active cases in the former and over 10 per cent in the latter. Aggarwal said that there are overall 25 Omicron cases in the country so far. All detected cases have mild symptoms. Less than 0.04 per cent of total variants were detected.

Aggarwal further adds that 2 countries had reported Omicron cases till 24th November and now 59 countries have reported cases of Omicron. These 59 countries have reported 2,936 Omicron cases. Besides this, 78,054 probable cases were detected whose genome sequencing is underway.

WHO on Covid-19 scenario

WHO highlighted that public health measures should be abided by on a continual basis, besides vaccination. Adequate precautions have to be followed.

NITI Aayog on increasing Covid-19 cases in India

As far as protection capability is concerned, we are now operating at a risky and unacceptable level. Mask usage is declining. We have to remember that both vaccines and masks are important. We should learn from the global situation, said Dr VK Paul, Member-Health, NITI Aayog.

Meanwhile, one Omicron case is found in the Dharavi area of Mumbai. The person had returned from Tanzania. He is now admitted at SevenHills Hospital, said Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Covid-19: Delhi reports 2,202 cases, highest in six months; India logs over 20k cases

The coronavirus has started to raise its ugly head in the country once again. There is currently concern about the fourth wave in India, where the number of Covid-19 cases has been increasing continuously for more than a week.

India reported 20,551 new Covid-19 infections and 70 fatalities in the last 24 hours. According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Affairs, the daily positivity rate in the country reached 5.14 percent and the weekly positivity rate stood at 4.64 percent. The fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 percent, and the recovery rate stood at 98.50 percent.

India’s tally of Covid-19 cases has risen to 4,41,07,588 and the death toll has climbed to 5,26,600. The active Covid-19 cases in the country stood at 1,35,364.

The capital registered 2,202 cases, which is the highest in six months. The health department data shows the positivity rate in the capital reached 11.84 percent. On Wednesday, Delhi reported 2,073 Covid-19 cases with a positivity rate of 11.64 percent. The active cases in Delhi are 6,175.

Maharashtra reported 1,862 cases and seven deaths. Assam logged 431 new cases and two fatalities and Odisha recorded 836 new cases. The five states with the most active cases are Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Punjab.

In response to the rising number of Covid cases and low booster dose uptake throughout India, the Union Health Ministry has offered free booster doses to all eligible individuals over the age of 18 at government-run vaccination centers.

The nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive was started in the country on 16 January 2021, since then 2,055,947,243 vaccine doses have been administered across India.
