The Union Health Ministry on Saturday said an upsurge in daily new Covid-19 cases has been recorded in Kerala, Punjab, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
In a statement, the Ministry said that Maharashtra has exhibited a spike in the number of daily active new cases in the past week. It has accounted for the highest number of daily new cases in the country. The state has reported 6,112 daily new cases in the last 24 hours.
The state authorities have attributed the rise to a laxity in following the safety measures, especially after local train services started running in Maharashtra. The strict measures have been announced in Mumbai, Amravati and Yavatmal.
The authorities have directed that citizens flouting the rules for home isolation, weddings, public gathering will be prosecuted. Also, nearly 5000 marshals have been deployed to enforce mask wearing in Mumbai.
Similar to Maharashtra, Punjab has also shown a sudden spike in the daily active cases, with 383 fresh cases registered in the last 24 hours, said the Centre.
Chhattisgarh saw a rise in the number of active cases with 259 Covid-19 cases recorded in the last 24 hours. Also, Madhya Pradesh has been witnessing a rise in the number of daily active new cases, 297 cases have been registered in the state in the last 24 hours. While Kerala continues to report a high number of coronavirus cases, informed the Ministry.
The Centre stated that only two states, Maharashtra and Kerala, account for 75.87 per cent of total number of active Covid-19 cases. It has also stressed upon the importance of adherence to Covid protocols and appropriate behaviour for breaking the chain of transmission and containment of spread of the deadly disease.
According to the health ministry, 18 states/ Union territories have not registered any Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours. These are Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, Haryana, J&K (UT), Tripura, Assam, Chandigarh, Lakshadweep, Manipur, Meghalaya, Ladakh (UT), Mizoram, Sikkim, Nagaland, among others.
A total of 1,07,15,204 Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered so far, including 63,28,479 healthcare workers (first dose), 8,47,161 healthcare workers (second dose) and 35,39,564 frontline workers (first dose), the ministry said.

Nine states namely Rajasthan, Kolkata, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar Uttar Pradesh , Maharashtra Gujarat and Odisha have administered more than five lakh doses each, the ministry added.
