Light rain and thunderstorms forecast to ease Delhi-NCR heatwave

Delhi-NCR will see more light rain and thunderstorms, easing the heatwave, as per the IMD. Yellow alert issued due to strong winds and stormy weather.

Rain

Delhi-NCR is set to continue experiencing relief from the recent heatwave as light rain and thunderstorms are expected on Friday, according to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). A combination of cloudy skies, thunder, and gusty winds will bring cooler conditions and ease the intense heat the region has faced this month.

Weather pattern signals continued respite

Friday’s weather forecast predicts a partly cloudy sky throughout the day, with thunder and lightning likely at intervals. The IMD has also anticipated rainfall—ranging from very light to light showers—which is expected to contribute to a further drop in temperature, maintaining the recent cooling trend.

This follows a week of sporadic rain and a notable thunderstorm earlier that significantly cooled the city. Wednesday saw substantial cloud cover, rain, and gusty winds, which together helped lower the maximum temperature to around 34–35°C—considerably less than earlier in May.

Strong winds and yellow alert issued

Thunderstorms on Friday may bring winds blowing at 30 to 40 km/h, with occasional gusts reaching up to 50 km/h. These strong gusts could stir up dust, particularly during the evening and nighttime hours. As a result, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for the region, cautioning residents about potentially stormy weather.

No immediate return of heatwave conditions

The outlook for the weekend remains favorable, with weather models indicating that thunderstorms and occasional showers are likely to continue until Sunday, May 25. This ongoing spell of moderate, rainy conditions has effectively pushed back any threat of an immediate heatwave.

Meanwhile, the IMD has also highlighted that conditions are becoming suitable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon, marking a broader seasonal shift in the region’s weather.

Bengal withdraws Banga Bibhushan from BJP MP Nagendra Ray over Netaji remarks

West Bengal has withdrawn the Banga Bibhushan awarded to BJP MP Nagendra Ray after his controversial remarks about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

The West Bengal government has withdrawn the Banga Bibhushan, the state’s highest civilian honour, from BJP Rajya Sabha MP Nagendra Ray, popularly known as Ananta Maharaj, amid controversy over his remarks about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

The award was conferred on Ray on February 21, 2026, when the Mamata Banerjee government was in power. The state government said the honour recognises distinguished and exemplary contributions to the state and its people and carries a high degree of dignity and prestige.

Why Bengal withdrew the award

The decision came less than 24 hours after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari directed the police to take stringent action, including arrests, against people making derogatory remarks about Netaji on social media.

Adhikari had also said that the law would apply equally to MPs, MLAs and government officials.

The directive followed remarks by Ananta Maharaj in which he described Netaji as a “war criminal” and questioned his leadership as well as the role of the Azad Hind Fauj in India’s freedom struggle.

What the Bengal government said

In its order, the state government said that “certain facts and circumstances” had emerged that raised questions over Nagendra Ray’s continued retention of the honour.

The government said the competent authority had concluded that retaining the Banga Bibhushan was inconsistent with the dignity, prestige and purpose of the award.

It therefore withdrew and annulled the honour conferred upon Nagendra Ray on February 21, 2026, with immediate effect. The order did not specifically identify the particular offence behind the decision.

Who is Nagendra Ray?

Nagendra Ray, popularly known as Ananta Maharaj, is a BJP Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal who hails from Cooch Behar in the northern part of the state and is a leader of the Rajbanshi community.

The withdrawal of the state honour comes amid controversy over his remarks concerning Netaji, a prominent figure in India’s freedom struggle and a revered personality in Bengal.
