Jalgaon train accident: 11 passengers jump out fearing fire, run over by another train

Emergency equipment, such as glass cutters and floodlights, was also made available to aid in rescue and treatment efforts. The scale of the accident necessitated a coordinated response from the local administration and railway authorities.

A horrific train accident in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra, claimed the lives of at least 11 people on Wednesday afternoon. The tragedy unfolded near Paranda railway station at approximately 4:19 pm when the Bengaluru Express collided with passengers who had jumped from the Pushpak Express.

The Pushpak Express, travelling from Lucknow to Mumbai, experienced an incident involving smoke emanating from its wheels, likely due to a mechanical failure. Passengers, fearing a potential fire, panicked and took drastic action.

Instead of waiting for assistance from the train crew or following established emergency procedures, a number of passengers pulled the emergency chain, bringing the train to a halt, and then leapt onto the railway tracks in a desperate attempt to escape.

This chaotic scene created a devastating scenario. Simultaneously, the Bengaluru Express, travelling in the opposite direction, approached at speed. Unable to react in time, the train struck the passengers who were stranded on the tracks, resulting in the tragic loss of life and numerous injuries.

The immediate aftermath was one of confusion and distress. Emergency services were swiftly mobilized, with ambulances dispatched to the scene to transport the injured to nearby hospitals, including the general hospital in Jalgaon and several private facilities.

Emergency equipment, such as glass cutters and floodlights, was also made available to aid in rescue and treatment efforts. The scale of the accident necessitated a coordinated response from the local administration and railway authorities.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his deepest condolences and stated that the state government was fully committed to providing assistance to the victims and their families. He confirmed that ministers and officials were immediately deployed to the scene to oversee the rescue operation and coordinate the medical response.

He highlighted the dispatch of eight ambulances and the preparation of local hospitals for the influx of injured passengers.

The incident sparked an immediate investigation to determine the exact cause of the smoke on the Pushpak Express and to evaluate the adequacy of the emergency response. Questions regarding passenger safety protocols and the effectiveness of emergency procedures in preventing such tragedies are likely to be raised. Preliminary reports suggest that the cause might have been a “hot axle” or “brake-binding” incident, leading to the sparks and smoke that triggered the panic.

The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with rail travel and the importance of robust safety procedures, effective communication, and passenger awareness in preventing similar occurrences in the future.

The investigation will likely focus on both the mechanical failure of the Pushpak Express and the actions of the passengers in the face of perceived danger. The full extent of the casualties and the long-term consequences of this devastating accident are still unfolding.

Saif Ali Khan hugs auto driver who took him to hospital, pic surfaces

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police swiftly apprehended the attacker, 30-year-old Bangladeshi national Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, in Thane. He was subsequently remanded into police custody, facing charges related to the assault and burglary.

On January 16, Saif Ali Khan’s life took an unexpected turn. A burglary attempt at his Bandra residence escalated into a violent attack, leaving the actor with six stab wounds. The incident, occurring around 2:30 am, immediately triggered a race against time. However, amidst the chaos and fear, a simple act of kindness would become a defining moment in the narrative.

Bhajan Singh Rana, an auto-rickshaw driver, found himself at the heart of this unfolding drama. A frantic call for help alerted him to the situation outside his gate. Without hesitation, Rana responded, unaware that his passenger was the renowned Bollywood actor.

Khan, despite his injuries, managed to walk to the auto-rickshaw, his primary concern being the travel time to Lilavati Hospital. Rana remembers Khan’s calm demeanour, contrasting sharply with the severity of his bleeding; his white kurta stained crimson from the wounds to his neck and back.

The short, tense journey to the hospital became a silent testament to both the actor’s resilience and the driver’s compassion. Rana, moved by the urgency and the actor’s condition, waived the fare. His only reward was the satisfaction of having provided crucial assistance during a critical moment.

Days later, a deeply moving reunion took place. Saif Ali Khan, now recovering, met with Rana at Lilavati Hospital before his discharge. The encounter was not merely a formal thank you; it was a demonstration of profound gratitude. Khan’s mother, Sharmila Tagore, joined the meeting, expressing her sincere appreciation and bestowing blessings upon the man who played such a vital role in her son’s recovery.

The meeting was a poignant reminder of human kindness amidst adversity. Khan’s words, promising to stay in touch and offering future help, encapsulated the genuine bond forged between the actor and his unexpected saviour.

Rana, in turn, described the encounter as deeply respectful, sharing that he had the honour of touching the feet of both Saif Ali Khan and Sharmila Tagore, and that they even took photos with him. The images captured a moment of genuine gratitude and mutual respect, a stark contrast to the violence that had preceded it.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police swiftly apprehended the attacker, 30-year-old Bangladeshi national Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, in Thane. He was subsequently remanded into police custody, facing charges related to the assault and burglary.

The incident, while highlighting the vulnerability of even high-profile individuals, also served as a testament to the unexpected kindness and quick thinking of ordinary citizens like Bhajan Singh Rana.

Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) withdraws support to BJP-ruled government in Manipur

The BJP currently holds a commanding majority in the 60-member assembly, with 37 MLAs of its own, supplemented by five MLAs from the Naga People’s Front and three independents.

In a significant political manoeuvre, the Janata Dal (United), led by Nitish Kumar, has withdrawn its support from the BJP-led government in Manipur, marking a dramatic shift in the state’s political landscape.

The JDU’s lone MLA in the Manipur Assembly will now occupy a seat among the Opposition ranks, signalling a clear break from the ruling coalition. While this development is unlikely to destabilize the BJP’s firm grip on power, it carries substantial symbolic weight, considering the JDU’s crucial role as a key ally of the BJP at the national level and in Bihar.

The decision follows a similar move by the National People’s Party (NPP), which governs Meghalaya, several months ago. The JDU’s initial success in the 2022 Manipur Assembly elections, securing six seats, was short-lived. Within months, five of its six MLAs defected to the BJP, bolstering the ruling party’s numbers and solidifying its position.

The BJP currently holds a commanding majority in the 60-member assembly, with 37 MLAs of its own, supplemented by five MLAs from the Naga People’s Front and three independents.

Ksh Biren Singh, who heads the Manipur unit of the JDU, formally communicated the party’s decision to withdraw support in a letter addressed to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. The letter meticulously outlines the sequence of events, starting with the JDU’s electoral performance in the 2022 Assembly elections, the subsequent defection of five MLAs to the BJP, and the ongoing legal proceedings against these defectors under the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

The letter explicitly states that the JDU’s decision to withdraw support is directly linked to its recent affiliation with the INDIA bloc, a formidable coalition of opposition parties.

The letter further emphasizes that the JDU’s lone remaining MLA in Manipur, Md. Abdul Nasir, will be formally recognized as an opposition MLA, reflecting the party’s complete withdrawal of support for the BJP-led government. The seating arrangement for Md. Abdul Nasir in the opposition benches was already implemented during the last session of the Assembly.

This political realignment assumes added significance given the JDU’s prominent role in the national political arena. The party secured 12 seats in the recent general elections, contributing significantly to the BJP’s overall majority.

The BJP and JDU remain allies in Bihar, a state gearing up for Assembly elections in the near future. Kumar, the JDU president and Chief Minister of Bihar, has a track record of shifting political allegiances, adding a layer of complexity to the current situation.

His return to the NDA fold last year, after a stint as a key player in the INDIA opposition bloc, highlights his unpredictable political manoeuvring. The JDU’s withdrawal of support from the Manipur government underscores the fluid nature of political alliances in India and the ever-changing dynamics of power.
