Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced a thorough investigation into a deadly stampede at the Sree Lairai Devi Temple in Shirgao village, North Goa, which killed six people and injured over 65 during the annual Lairai Jatra festival early Saturday morning.
Visiting the site hours after the 3:30 a.m. tragedy, Sawant vowed to make the probe’s findings public and implement stricter safety measures for future temple festivals across the state.
The stampede occurred during the crowded festival, which draws devotees from Goa and neighboring states to honour Goddess Lairai, a revered deity symbolizing abundance and protection.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Arun Desai of Bicholim Police Station described the chaos: “The crowd swelled throughout May 2, overwhelming our 1,000-strong police force from six stations. We suspect someone tripped, triggering a chain reaction where people were trampled.”
The injured, including children, women, men, and seniors, are receiving treatment at hospitals in Ponda, Asilo, Mapusa, and Goa Medical College in Bambolim, with six in critical condition.
Sawant, who visited North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa at dawn, expressed grief and assured support for affected families. “I’m devastated by this tragedy. We’re committed to helping the injured and ensuring such incidents don’t recur,” he told reporters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a call with Sawant, offered full central assistance, with the Prime Minister’s Office actively monitoring the situation, according to Goa BJP president Damodar Naik.
The Lairai Jatra, known for its palki procession and agnidivya fire-walking ritual, where devotees walk barefoot over embers, typically attracts massive crowds. Ramesh Gauns, a 74-year-old retired teacher from Bicholim, lamented, “Goddess Lairai brings blessings and peace. This is the first time we’ve witnessed such a heartbreak at the jatra.”
President Droupadi Murmu expressed condolences on X, stating, “Deeply saddened by the Shirgao stampede. My condolences to the bereaved families, and I pray for the swift recovery of the injured.”
The opposition Congress, led by Goa Pradesh Congress Committee in-charge Amarnath Panjikar, offered solidarity and urged the state to support the Devasthan Committee to safely conduct the remaining four days of the festival, emphasizing enhanced crowd management and emergency protocols.
The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), through national spokesman Trajano D’Mello, demanded a commission to probe the incident, alleging negligence by law enforcement. “The government must fix responsibility, take action, and provide immediate ex-gratia payments to victims’ families,” D’Mello said.
