Home Minister Rajnath Singh on mob lynching: States responsible

Condemning mob lynching incidents in the country, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday, July 19, put the onus on state governments, saying they were responsible for maintaining law and order.

He blamed fake news and false information on social media for such violence, glossing over the role of persons affiliated to his own party, BJP, in many such incidents.

Dissatisfied with his statement, the Congress walked out of the House.

Singh was addressing the Lok Sabha on the second day of the monsoon session of Parliament. His statement comes days after the Supreme Court came down hard on Centre and state governments for mob lynching incidents, giving them specific directions on measures they have take within a month to curb the trend, and a day after Congress MP Shashi Tharoor raised the issue in Lok Sabha.

In Zero Hour, Congress raised the issue of attack on Swami Agnivesh in BJP-ruled Jharkhand, asking asks why no arrests had been made yet. The opposition party demanded   that the Centre frame a law to tackle mob lynching.

The home minister said that the Centre has requested social media operators to install checks in their system to curb the menace.

“The lynching incidents happened in the past well. I condemn all the incidents on behalf of my government. Unverified reports, fake news spread through social media is a trigger. It is the state government’s responsibility to ensure that no such incidents take place in the future. Law and order is a state subject. This is why we have requested the social media operators to keep a tab in order to avoid the spread of fake information,” he said.

“Such incidents are unfortunate, I have spoken to the chief ministers personally to ensure the perpetrators are arrested,” Singh said, according to media reports.

Expressing their dissatisfaction with the home minister, few members of Congress staged a walkout.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said “The Home Minister’s statement in Lok Sabha on mob lynching was not satisfactory at all, that is why we staged a walkout from the house. This is not a game of ping-pong that states and Centre keep shifting responsibilities

Speaking in Lok Sabha at the start of the monsoon session on Wednesday, Tharoor, whose office in Thiruvananthapuram had been attacked by BJP youth wing workers, had raised the issue, saying: “Those who are carrying out mob lynching and mob killings are attacking the ground rules of our democracy.”

“Their victims in recent months have included intellectuals, minorities, various citizens of the country. Yesterday even Swami Agnivesh was attacked… these are people who have expressed dissent against rising tolerance against today’s India and they are being attacked physically,” he said.

“I strongly urge the prime minister to break his silence on the behaviour of his partymen,” he said, adding that PM Modi should take action “against anti-national elements indulging in lynching and mob frenzy.”

The Congress party announced Telangana Congress Chief Revanth Reddy will be the next chief minister of the state on Tuesday. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said the swearing in ceremony is going to take place on December 7. The Congress party did not reveal whether there will be one or more deputy chief ministers and what role senior leaders from Telangana will have in the government.

Reddy has been credited for the Congress party’s thumping victory in the Telangana state elections. He was the face of the Congress’s winning campaign. Revanth Reddy is a Lok Sabha MP and a two time MLA. He represented the assembly of undivided Andhra Pradesh in 2009 and later in Telangana assembly in 2014.

Reddy started his political career with the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS. In 2007 he was elected as a Member of Legislative Council (MLC) as an independent candidate. Later Reddy joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). He was elected to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly from Kodangal constituency in 2009.

He quit the party after he found involved in an alledged bribing scandal. He joined the Congress party in 2017 and was appointed as the TPCC chief in 2021. The 54 year old leader earned many critics within the party ranks after he changed the style of functioning as a state Congress chief.

He was projected as a big stage leader and addressed many high ticket rallies in the campaigning for the assembly elections. Reddy is known to take on KCR and his family in his speeches and interviews. In a historic win the Congress party defeated the K Chandrasekhar Rao led (BRS) government as it crossed the majority mark by winning 64 seats in Telangana. The BRS trailed with 38 seats, while the BJP improved its 2018 tally by winning eight seats.  The AIMIM won 7 seats, while the CPI could manage only one seat.

In a terrifying footage of the incident, the accused was seen sitting next to Gogamedi before shooting him, taking him by surprise. He was close-range shot at least five times, the last bullet going right through his brain.

The commander of the fringe outfit can be seen on CCTV staring at his phone when the individuals seated across from him got up and opened fire. The gunmen opened fire on him after seeing one of his guards attempt to stop them.

They (the attackers) sat with Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi for at least 10 minutes before shooting him, according to police.

The men can be seen firing at Gogamedi repeatedly in the 20-second video, even after he had stopped moving.

Reports state that the incident happened at approximately 12:30 PM today. After being hurt and being taken to a hospital, Gogamedi and two of his friends were informed that the well-known Rajput chieftain had passed away.

One of the Goldy Brar gang members has taken credit for the killing. We accept complete accountability for the killing of Sukhdev Gogamedi, Rohit Godara Kapurisr said on Facebook. He said the incident was sparked by Gogamedi’s used to support their enemies.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and several governmental agencies in the nation are looking for Canadian mobster Brar. The Punjabi artist Siddhu Moosewala’s murder is another reason he is wanted.

Gogamedi was a member of the Rajput Karni Sena, the group that had organised the demonstrations against the Bollywood film Padmaavat. Later, under the leadership of Lokendra Singh Kalvi, he broke away from the group and started his own group in 2015.
