For the first time in the third wave, India reported over 3 lakh cases on January 19. The country recorded 3.17 lakh fresh Covid-19 cases in a single day, which is the biggest single-day spike in 249 days. The overall tally of Covid-19 infections has reached 3.8 crore.
In the last 24 hours, India reported 491 deaths, taking the total fatalities tally to 4,87,693. There is a 27 percent rise in yesterday’s cases from a week ago. At the global level, India is the second worst-hit country after the US.
As compared to the last week of December, India was reporting around 20,000 to 25,000 daily cases and now the single-day active cases have crossed over 3 lakh mark. The active cases now comprise 5.03 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has decreased to 93.69 per cent.
Maharashtra reported the highest single-day Covid-19 infections with 43,697 infections in the last 24 hours followed by Karnataka which recorded 40,499 cases and Kerala 34,199 cases.
State-wise Covid cases reported in the last 24 hours
Kerala reported 34,199 new Covid-19 cases and 49 deaths, taking the active tally to 1,68,383. 8,193 people were recovered in a single day from Covid. However, 85 deaths were added to the death tally as per new guidelines of the Central government.
Goa reported 3,936 Covid-19 cases and 7 deaths, taking the active caseload to 22,807. 3,119 people were recovered from Covid in a single day.
Jammu and Kashmir recorded 5,818 new cases and 4 deaths, taking the overall active tally to 26,236, 1,255 people were recovered from Covid-19 in a single day.
Uttar Pradesh reported 17,776 fresh cases, active infection count climbs to 98,238, death toll rises to 22,990 with 7 new fatalities.
Assam reported the highest single-day spike in Covid-19 cases for the third day in a row with 8,339 people testing positive for the disease, tally climbs to 6,70,128.
Delhi recorded 13,785 fresh Covid-19 cases and 35 deaths in a single day, taking the active tally to 75,282. 16,580 people were recovered from the virus. The positivity rate has dipped to 23.86 per cent.
Maharashtra reported 43,697 new Covid-19 cases and 49 deaths in a single day, taking the active caseload to 2,64,708.
Haryana reported 8,847 new cases and 12 deaths in a single day, taking the active tally to 10,136.
Meanwhile, 9,287 cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus were detected in India so far.
