Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, has officially stepped down from his constitutional post, citing health concerns as the primary reason. The 74-year-old submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu late in the evening, stating that he would prioritise medical advice and personal well-being going forward. His resignation is effective immediately as per Article 67(a) of the Constitution.
Full day in Rajya Sabha before stepping down
Despite his resignation coming into effect without delay, Dhankhar remained active until the last moment—administering oath to eight newly appointed Rajya Sabha members during the day. In his letter to the President, he expressed gratitude for her support and highlighted the “soothing wonderful working relationship” they shared during his tenure.
He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers for their cooperation, calling the PM’s support “invaluable” and noting the insights he gained while in office.
Recent health episodes raised concern
Dhankhar’s decision follows a series of recent health scares. In March, he was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences due to cardiac-related issues. More recently, he collapsed during the Golden Jubilee function at Kumaon University, prompting further medical caution.
A term cut short
Jagdeep Dhankhar assumed office in 2022 after defeating opposition candidate Margaret Alva. With two years still remaining in his tenure, his resignation makes him only the third Vice President in Indian history to step down before completing a full term. VV Giri and R Venkataraman had resigned in 1969 and 1987 respectively, both to assume the office of the President.
A tenure marked by constitutional assertiveness
Before taking on the Vice Presidential role, Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal, where he was known for frequent and pointed confrontations with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. His tenure was often marked by his outspoken commentary, sometimes eclipsing the opposition’s voice in the state.
Praised by PM Modi during his nomination, the leader was hailed as a “Kisan Putra” with deep constitutional knowledge and expertise in legislative matters. “He will be an outstanding Chair in the Rajya Sabha,” Modi had said at the time.
