People of so-called upper castes in Karnataka’s Mysuru cleaned the water tank with cow urine after a Dalit woman allegedly drank water from it. Chamarajanar rural police have registered a case against the villager in connection with the incident based on one of the villagers named, Giriyappa.

Giriyappa, in a complaint, said the Dalit woman was insulted after she allegedly drank water from the water tank in Sargur taluk in Mysuru that was inhabited by people from the upper castes. The reports state that after the woman drank water, the tank was subsequently drained and purified with cow urine.

Meanwhile, V Somanna, the district official in charge, stated on Sunday that no complaint had been filed in relation to the incident. He said a team of officials went to the spot to collect evidence of the tank being cleaned with cow urine, but no proof was found.

In the wake of unverified reports about the incident on social media, officials from various departments visited Heggotra on Sunday and met the residents. In one such meeting, members of Dalit communities complained that they were once prevented from entering a nearby temple.

The authorities threatened the people with harsh punishment if they forbade Dalits from entering the shrine. In the meantime, children from Dalit communities went to the local tanks and drank water there to convince the villagers that water transcends caste.

Although officials had not received a formal complaint that the tank had been cleaned, Basavaraj, Tehsildar of Chamarajanagar Taluk, admitted that the act in question was being probed. If the woman in question confirms the rumours, the police will be asked to take suo moto cognizance and file a case, he said.
