Karnataka: Hindu outfit file complaint against stand-up comic Vir Das for hurting religious sentiments, demands show cancellation in Bengaluru

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has filed a complaint against actor-comedian Vir Das for hurting religious sentiments and has also demanded to cancel his show that is scheduled to be held in Bengaluru on November 10.

The Hindu outfit has demanded the cancellation of the comedian’s show at Malleshwar Chowdiah Memorial Hall on November 10.

The group said in the lawsuit that the comedian’s presentation offended Hindus’ religious sentiments and painted a negative picture of India.

A monologue that comedian Vir Das performed during a performance in the US caused uproar, with many people criticising him on social media for insulting India. ‘I come from two Indias’ is a YouTube video that was posted by Vir Das. His performance at the John F Kennedy Center in Washington, DC included the monologue you can see in the video.

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, which works for uniting Hindus and establishing the ‘Hindu Nation’, has filed the complaint with Vyalikaval police station.

The complaint reads, it has been noticed that the controversial comedian Vir Das is holding a comedy show on November 10 at Chowdiah Memorial Hall in Malleshwaram, Bengaluru . Earlier, he made derogatory statements against women, our Prime Minister and against India at John F Kennedy Centre in Washington DC, America and denigrated the Nation. He had said that in India we worship women in the day and rape them at night, it adds.

It also said, in this background, it was not right to allow such a controversial person to hold such a programme in a communally sensitive area like Bengaluru.

The complaint stated that at the time when Karnataka was already facing many law and order problems owing to communal happenings, such a show which could violate the law and order should not be organised, said the Hindu outfit demanding the immediate cancellation of the programme.

Earlier in August, the Bengaluru Police interrupted Munawar Faruqui, another controversial comedian. The show was officially cancelled since the organisers did not obtain permission.

Faruqui later clarified that it was cancelled due to health issues.

A Faruqui show was also cancelled by Bengaluru police in November of last year as a result of threats made by right-wing organisations.
