Amid the growing debate in the country over live-in relationships triggered by the recent brutal murders of women by their live-in partners, the National Commission for Women (NCW), Friday, urged parents to be supportive of their children in such relationships to ensure the they aren’t hesitant to share their feelings and thoughts with them.

Speaking in the backdrop of the recent killings, NCW chief Rekha Sharma observed in recent cases, such as that of Nikki Yadav, the parents were not in agreement or supportive of their children in such relationships.

Sharma pointed out that in the Nikki Yadav case, the man’s parents were pushing him to getting married which led to the heinous act he committed, adding that in the Shraddha Walkar case, the victim was out of touch with her family.

The Women’s Panel chief urged parents to accept the live-in relationships of their children and be supportive, adding that parents must treat their kids with respect and not treat them as possessions as this leads to a disconnect between the children and their parents.

She said the parents must treat their children as friends when they come of age so they can confide in them.

Recently, 23-year-old Nikki Yadav was allegedly strangled to death with a USB cable by her live-in boyfriend, Sahil Gehlot, on the intervening night of February 9-10, who then dumped her body in a refrigerator in his Dhaba on the outskirts of Mitraon village in southwest Delhi.

The body was recovered after three days. Sahil, reportedly, married another woman on the same he murdered Nikki.

The case bears an eerie resemblance to the infamous Shraddha Walkar murder case, where the victim’s body was cut into pieces and hidden inside a freezer.

The accused, 28-year-old Aaftab Amin Poonawala, allegedly sawed Shraddha Walkar’s body into 35 pieces and kept them in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks at his residence in south Delhi’s Mehrauli before dumping them across the city over several days. Poonawala is currently in jail facing trial.

In another recent case, Shraddha was allegedly strangled, chopped into several pieces, and disposed of at different locations of a forest area in south Delhi for several months by her live-in partner Aaftab Amin Poonawala.

In another similar case, a 37-year-old Nurse, Neha, was slain by her live-in partner, in Maharashtra’s Palghar on earlier this week. As per the police, the accused, who was in a relationship with the victim for the past three years and living with her from the past six months, stuffed her body in bed storage and fled.

Delhi Assembly elections: BJP promises free education and student aid, AAP raises concerns

Arvind Kejriwal addressing media after writing to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on BJP’s alleged electoral misconduct

As Delhi gears up for the upcoming assembly elections on February 5, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released the second installment of its election manifesto, promising comprehensive solutions to citizen issues and tackling misgovernance and corruption allegations against the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The manifesto, dubbed ‘sankalp patra,’ includes significant pledges such as free education from pre-school to postgraduate levels for needy students at government institutions, and a financial package comprising Rs 15,000 and travel reimbursements for young individuals taking entrance exams. Scheduled Caste students enrolled in technical and professional courses are also promised a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000.

Building on their first manifesto which targeted women voters, the BJP’s latest promises focus on the youth, with over 1.5 lakh set to benefit from a new skills training program. This release follows criticisms by AAP of the BJP’s approach, especially after the tragic incident last July where three civil service aspirants lost their lives due to flooding.

Anurag Thakur, former Union Minister, emphasized the ‘Modi ki guarantee’ assurance, stating these initiatives would be implemented swiftly if the BJP is elected. The manifesto also includes welfare measures for domestic workers and insurance schemes for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers, who have traditionally been a strong support base for AAP.

In response, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal critiqued the BJP’s plans, particularly highlighting a clause that, according to him, would limit free education to only “eligible” children, deviating from AAP’s policy of universal free education. Kejriwal also recalled BJP’s earlier statement on discontinuing free healthcare, framing these promises as a threat to the financial stability of Delhi’s households.

The AAP’s counter-campaign warns voters that electing BJP could lead to increased living costs and bureaucratic hurdles in accessing education and healthcare, urging the electorate to consider these factors carefully. With the election results due on February 8, both parties continue to vie for public favor through promises aimed at key demographics.
