Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra launched a sharp attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday, demanding his resignation following the Election Commission’s (EC) claim that 56 lakh illegal voters were identified in Bihar during its ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls.
Moitra questioned the functioning of the Home Ministry, raising concerns over how such large-scale discrepancies were allowed in a border state. She stated that if the central government believes 56 lakh people have infiltrated into Bihar, then the responsibility lies squarely with the Home Minister and he should resign.
Citing that border security falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Moitra expressed serious concern over the possibility of infiltration and voter fraud. She also alleged that the EC was functioning as an extension of the BJP and claimed that the Chief Election Commissioner was speaking in a manner similar to a party spokesperson.
She remarked that such an incident was unprecedented in India’s electoral history, pointing out that within just 24 hours, the number of untraceable voters had surged from over 11,000 to more than one lakh.
According to the EC’s latest findings, around one lakh voters were found to be untraceable, while another 55 lakh were marked as either deceased, permanently migrated, or registered at multiple locations. A total of 56 lakh entries, accounting for nearly 7% of Bihar’s 7.9 crore electorate, have been categorized as electors wrongly included in the voter rolls.
An EC official warned that the presence of such voters posed a serious threat of bogus voting in the upcoming elections. Some of the one lakh untraceable entries, the official said, could potentially be illegal immigrants, possibly from neighboring regions such as West Bengal, who were added due to flawed verification or corrupt practices.
The EC confirmed that all 56 lakh names would be removed from the draft electoral roll scheduled for publication on August 1.
