The Supreme Court delayed hearing on an interim bail petition filed by former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who is being held in connection with corruption and money laundering proceedings relating to the now-scrapped tax scheme, to October 4.

At the outset, a bench comprised of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti stated that the pleas could be heard at the conclusion of the day today, Friday, or on another day.

Senior attorney Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing for Sisodia, said, the hearing would take a long time. He also said, there is urgency and if this case can be accommodated on October 4, Wednesday.

For the central investigation agencies, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju appeared before the Supreme Court. Sisodia has requested an interim bail to visit his unwell wife Seema on humanitarian grounds, and has provided medical papers regarding her deteriorating health.

The Supreme Court rejected to issue an order on interim bail on August 4 and re-listed the case for hearing on interim relief and the main bail application on September 4.

In mid-July of this year, the Supreme Court issued a notice and requested responses from the investigation agencies on the pleas made by the top AAP leader contesting judgements of the Delhi High Court granting him bail in the CBI and ED cases.

On July 3, a division bench of the Delhi High Court refused to grant bail to Manish Sisodia, stating that he did not meet the twin prerequisites for relief under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), as well as the triple test for bail.

The ED said in a statement on 7 July that it had attached assets worth Rs 52.24 crore belonging to Manish Sisodia, his wife, and some other accused persons in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case.

The ED arrested Sisodia on March 9, following the CBI’s arrest on February 26 of this year.

According to reports, the BJP legislature party is expected to meet on Friday in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to elect its leader formally. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several senior BJP leaders are likely to attend the oath-taking ceremony.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the frontrunner for the Chief Minister’s post following the BJP’s strong performance in the elections. Other names reportedly under consideration include Samik Bhattacharya, Sukanta Majumdar and Swapan Dasgupta.

The political developments come a day after Governor RN Ravi dissolved the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and state cabinet following the completion of the Assembly election process. The dissolution order was issued under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution after outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declined to submit her resignation despite the Trinamool Congress losing power.

The BJP secured a clear majority in the 294-member Assembly, ending the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule in the state. The election outcome marks a major political shift in West Bengal, where the BJP is set to form a government for the first time.
