A serene honeymoon in the picturesque hills of Meghalaya turned into a national mystery when an Indore couple vanished, only for it to culminate in the tragic death of Raja Raghuvanshi and the stunning arrest of his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi. What began as a romantic getaway has become a haunting tale of betrayal, deception, and murder.
Disappearance sparks nationwide attention
Raja (29) and Sonam (24), newlyweds from Indore, arrived in Shillong on May 21, checking into the Balaji Guest House. A day later, they rented a scooty and set out for Cherrapunji, stopping in Mawlakhiat village before trekking to Nongriat village. The couple was last seen checking out from Shipara Homestay on May 23.
Later that day, a phone call from Sonam to her mother-in-law—during which she sounded breathless—was the last contact with either of them. By May 24, their disappearance prompted an extensive search. Their rented scooty was found abandoned in Sohrarim village, intensifying the investigation.
From missing persons to a murder discovery
The breakthrough came on June 2, when a drone spotted a decomposed body in a gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls. It was confirmed to be Raja Raghuvanshi. Police later found his mobile phone and the murder weapon—a machete—near the site. Authorities declared it a clear case of homicide.
CCTV footage from their hotel emerged on June 5, and while Sonam remained untraceable, her family feared she had been abducted. Meghalaya Chief Minister promised full justice and coordinated efforts to find her.
Shocking twist: Wife becomes prime suspect
On June 6, the case took a dramatic turn. Sonam was found in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, with a mild fever and was taken into custody. According to police, she had either surrendered or was located under pressure. She was soon arrested, along with three others, for allegedly orchestrating her husband’s murder.
While Meghalaya Police confirmed Sonam’s arrest as part of a murder conspiracy, her family remains adamant about her innocence. Her father claims police fabricated the allegations and insists that Sonam could not have committed such a crime.
A mystery far from over
Even as Sonam is set to be handed over to Indore Police, questions linger about the motive, the other accused, and what truly transpired during that fateful trek in Meghalaya. One accused remains on the run, and investigators continue piecing together the truth behind a crime that has gripped the nation.
