Patanjali issues apology day after Supreme Court summons Ramdev in misleading ads case

Patanjali Ayurved’s Managing Director Acharya Balakrishna said the Supreme Court today that the company expresses regret for misleading advertisements.

Patanjali Ayurved’s Managing Director Acharya Balakrishna said  in the Supreme Court today that the company expresses regret for its misleading advertisement. He also ensured the court that they will make sure that such advertisements are not issued in the future.

The statement from the managing director came two days after the court ordered Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev to appear in person over Patanjali Ayurved’s misleading ads in two-weeks time.

On February 27, the Supreme Court banned Patanjali Ayurved from running advertisements for its medicines, which treat a variety of conditions, including obesity, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and high blood pressure. It served Acharya Balkrishna and Patanjali Ayurved with a notice of contempt.

The company promised the Supreme Court in November 2023 that it would refrain from making any unsubstantiated claims or assertions regarding the effectiveness of medicine or criticising the medical establishment. However, the company kept running misleading ads.

Acharya Balakrishna said in his Supreme Court affidavit that the ads that were published after November 2023 were only supposed to carry general statements, but they inadvertently contained offending sentences.

The Patanjali Media Department approved the ads, however, they were unaware of the November 2023 Supreme Court order.

The affidavit said, they’ll make sure that there are no more of these ads published in the future. The affidavit stated that the deponent’s intention is to encourage the nation’s citizens to lead healthier lives by consuming Patanjali products, including products for lifestyle ailments through the use of age-old literature and materials supplementing and backed by ayurvedic research. This is not to be taken as a defense, but rather as a clarification.

The Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, according to the corporation, is archaic and hasn’t been updated since 1996.

It further stated that the 1940 Drugs and Cosmetics Act was passed during a period of low scientific research on Ayurveda.

He also said, their only quest is for a better and healthier life for each and every citizen and to reduce the burden on the country’s healthcare infrastructure by providing holistic, evidence-based solutions for lifestyle related medical complications through the usage of the age-old traditional approach of Ayurveda and Yoga.

The idea was to promote ayurvedic products which are based on age-old literature/material backed by scientific research, the company said.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday slammed the Yogi Adityanath-led UP government after Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission aspirants’ protest continued for the fourth consecutive day outside the commission’s office in Prayagraj, saying the BJP has crossed all the limits of arrogance.

Yadav claimed that the UP Police took away the crutches of the disabled student protesting at the site in Allahabad, adding that he said this shows how cruel and insensitive the BJP government is.

“Such a government has no right to continue. BJP has crossed all the limits of arrogance. The higher a government rises, the lower and faster it falls. Today disabled students say they don’t want BJP!” the SP chief said in Hindi on X.

In another post, Yadav said if the arrogant BJP thinks that by removing the protesting candidates from outside commission’s office in “Prayagraj”, will put an end to the democratic protest of the youth fighting for their rights, then it has been mistaken.

“Movements are fought with the mind, not the body, and so far the world has not developed such a power that can take the mind under custody,” he added.

Maharashtra election: Constitution for PM Modi is blank as he never read it, says Rahul Gandhi

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi felt the red book of the Constitution which the Congress leader carries was blank as he never read it.  He was addressing a rally in Maharashtra’s Nandurbar.

Rahul Gandhi stated that the Constitution contains the soul of India and the principles envisaged by national icons like Birsa Munda, Dr B R Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. He claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that the Constitution which he shows in public meetings is empty because the Prime Minister has never read it.

Mentioning that BJP often says that he shows the red coloured Constitution, Rahul Gandhi said that the colour doesn’t matter to them, but what is written inside it. He added that they are ready to sacrifice their lives to protect it. He echoed that Congress wants adivasis, Dalits and backward classes to get representation in decision-making.

Reportedly, several BJP leaders in their campaign for the November 20 Maharashtra assembly election, have sought to link the red book displayed by Gandhi to urban Naxalism. Referring to the same, the Leader of Opposition alleged that PM Modi and the BJP were insulting the national icons by making such comments. He also charged that the BJP and RSS insult tribals by referring to them as vanvasi instead of adivasi.

He stressed that Adivasis are the first owners of the country and have the first right on water, forest and land. However, the BJP wants adivasis to remain in the jungle without any rights, he claimed.

Emphasizing on the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi’s (MVA) manifesto, the Congress leader said women, farmers and youth will be protected with provisions like Rs 3,000 monthly assistance and free bus travel, farm loan waiver up to Rs 3 lakh and Rs 4,000 per month assistance for unemployed youth.

Additionally, he also stressed on the demand for a caste census, underlining that it will help to ascertain the number of adivasis, Dalits and backward classes in Maharashtra and how much is their share in resources. He claimed that at present out of the eight per cent tribal population, their share in decision-making is only one per cent.

The Maharashtra Assembly Elections will be held on November 20. The counting of votes will take place on November 23.
