Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurled the national flag on Thursday for the 11th time in a row from the ramparts of the Red Fort on 78th Independence Day.
In his address to the nation on this occasion, PM Modi said it is a day to pay tribute to the countless people who made sacrifices and struggled for the country’s freedom. “The country is indebted to them,” he added.
The Prime Minister paid condolences to the families who lost their members in the recent national disasters.
His first Independence Day address of his third term takes him past former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who unfurled the tricolour 10 times from the ramparts of Red Fort during 2004-2014, and places him behind Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, who did the honours 17 and 16 times respectively.
Before reaching Red Fort, he paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial.
In his Independence Day speech, PM Modi said, “By overcoming all the hurdles, we can make India prosperous. We can achieve the target of ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047. If 40 crore people can break shackles of slavery to gain freedom, then with the same spirit 140 crore people can make India prosperous.”
PM Modi said that the government has brought big reforms on ground. For the poor, middle class, deprived and for the aspirations of youth, the government has chosen the path to bring reforms in their lives. He assured the citizens of India that his government’s commitment to bringing reform is neither just for editorials, praise nor under compulsion. It is to strengthen the country, the PM added.
PM Modi also threw light on different sectors including tourism, MSMEs, education, health, transport, and agriculture, and said there is an advanced system. Bringing the world’s best practices forward, the government wants to lead, he added. Every sector requires modernisation, advancement, and connectivity with technologies, underlining that the government is getting new support due to the policies in all sectors.
“We need to promote reforms in governance in order to achieve the dream of Viksit Bharat 2047. So that, there are no hurdles in the lives of common people. The delivery system in the governance needs more strengthening,” PM Modi said.
