Senior leaders of the Congress-led INDIA Bloc, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, were detained in Delhi during a protest march to the Election Commission’s office. The march, which began near Parliament, aimed to highlight allegations of voter list manipulation and the EC’s alleged collusion with the ruling BJP.
Those detained also included Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, and Shiv Sena’s Priyanka Chaturvedi. Before being taken away by bus, Rahul Gandhi told reporters that the protest was not political but aimed at safeguarding the Constitution and upholding the principle of one person, one vote.
Joint Commissioner of Police Deepak Purohit confirmed the detentions but did not provide exact numbers. Deputy Commissioner Devesh Kumar Mahla said police had permitted only 30 MPs to march to the EC and submit a complaint, but over 200 joined, prompting security action. Some MPs were also seen climbing barricades, while visuals showed Yadav doing the same. The Trinamool Congress claimed two MPs, including Mahua Moitra, fainted during the protest.
The Opposition has charged the EC of manipulating voter rolls to benefit the BJP, citing irregularities in Maharashtra’s 2024 election and during Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka. Concerns have been intensified over the EC’s special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar’s voter list, ordered months before state elections. The exercise has been challenged in the Supreme Court, with petitioners arguing it exceeds the EC’s authority and could disenfranchise voters.
The EC has defended the revision, insisting its process is transparent and aimed at ensuring fair elections. The Supreme Court has allowed it to proceed but instructed the EC to ensure genuine voters are not excluded and to allow time for appeals. Opposition leaders have also objected to the EC rejecting IDs like Aadhaar and its own voter cards for re-verification.
The BJP has dismissed the opposition’s allegations as a strategy to create anarchy, with ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Kiren Rijiju accusing Rahul Gandhi of undermining a constitutional body. BJP’s Amit Malviya demanded Gandhi submit proof under oath, warning that failure to do so would expose the protest as political theatre.
