S Jaishankar slams Pakistan in UNSC, says terror outfits operate with impunity in Islamabad

The heightened activities of the proscribed Haqqani network justifies this growing anxiety, Jaishankar said at a high-level UNSC briefing on Threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts. India holds the current presidency of the UNSC.

Foreign Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday raised concerns over the terror for the first time after the Taliban’s advance in Afghanistan. Launching a scathing attack on Islamabad, Jaishankar said whether in Afghanistan or against India, Pakistan-based terrorist groups like Lashkar-e Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed continue to operate with impunity and encouragement.

Addressing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the events in Afghanistan have naturally enhanced global concerns about their implications for both regional and international security.

The heightened activities of the proscribed Haqqani network justifies this growing anxiety, Jaishankar said at a high-level UNSC briefing on Threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts. India holds the current presidency of the UNSC.

S Jaishankar on Thursday selectively attacked Pakistan and its iron brother China. Jaishankar reminded the world on the pretext of Afghanistan, Pathankot, Pulwama, Mumbai attacks that these countries are protecting the terrorists and providing safe havens to them. While chairing the Security Council, the Indian External Affairs Minister called upon countries across the world to strongly oppose the hypocrisy of such countries.

Unfortunately, there are also some countries who seek to undermine or subvert our collective resolve to fight terrorism. That cannot be allowed to pass, he said, adding, It is also important, therefore, to end the stalemate preventing the adoption of a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism, which India has championed for so long.

The Foreign Minister warned the world about the danger of ISIL-Khorasan. He said in our own immediate neighbourhood, ISIL-Khorasan (ISIL-K) has become more energetic and is constantly seeking to expand its footprint. Events unfolding in Afghanistan have naturally enhanced global concerns about their implications for both regional and international security, he said.

Jaishankar said that despite international efforts, terrorists continue to get financial aid. The money continues to flow and the rewards for the murders are now being given in bitcoin as well, he added.

Expressing his solidarity with all the victims of terrorism, Jaishankar said that while next month marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in US, the 2008 Mumbai terror attack is etched in our memories. The memory of the 2016 Pathankot airport attack and the 2019 suicide bomb attack on our policemen in Pulwama is still fresh. We should never compromise with the menace of terrorism.

The External Affairs Minister said India believes that terrorism should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization or ethnic group. Involvement of vulnerable youth in radical activities through systematic online campaigns remains a matter of serious concern. Jaishankar said that the members of the UNSC have unanimously supported the approach of zero tolerance to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. He said the members expressed deep concern about the threats posed by ISIL (Daesh).

In other India news, Taliban has intensified the door-to-door search for people who worked or helped US and NATO forces, says United Nations Document.

Delhi High Court issues notice to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi in National Herald case

Delhi High Court has sought responses from Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on the ED’s plea challenging a trial court order in the National Herald case.

The Delhi High Court has sought responses from Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on a petition filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the National Herald case. The petition challenges a trial court order that refused to take cognisance of the agency’s prosecution complaint.

Justice Ravinder Dudeja issued notices to the Gandhis and other accused on the main petition, as well as on the ED’s application seeking a stay on the trial court’s December 16 order. The high court has listed the matter for further hearing on March 12, 2026.

The trial court had ruled that taking cognisance of the ED’s complaint was “impermissible in law” because the investigation was not based on a registered First Information Report (FIR). It observed that the prosecution complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) was not maintainable in the absence of an FIR for a scheduled offence.

According to the order, the ED’s probe originated from a private complaint rather than an FIR. The court further noted that since cognisance was declined on a legal question, it was not necessary to examine the merits of the allegations at that stage.

The trial court also referred to the complaint filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and the summoning order issued in 2014, stating that despite these developments, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) did not register an FIR in relation to the alleged scheduled offence.

The ED has accused Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, late Congress leaders Motilal Vora and Oscar Fernandes, Suman Dubey, Sam Pitroda, and a private company, Young Indian, of conspiracy and money laundering. The agency has alleged that properties worth around Rs 2,000 crore belonging to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), which publishes the National Herald newspaper, were acquired through Young Indian.

The agency further claimed that Sonia and Rahul Gandhi held a majority 76 per cent shareholding in Young Indian, which allegedly took over AJL’s assets in exchange for a Rs 90 crore loan.
