In light of increasing reports of tension within the Congress party and its leader Shashi Tharoor, the latter recently shared a thought-provoking quote on social media.
Tharoor has shared a line from Thomas Gray’s poem ‘Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College’ on X (formerly Twitter), which read, “Where ignorance is bliss, ‘tis folly to be wise.” He accompanied the quote with the caption, “Thought of the day.”
This post follows speculation about a growing divide between Tharoor and the Congress party, reportedly stemming from an article in which he commended the Kerala government’s policies. Additionally, Tharoor has been noted for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent trip to the United States.
In an effort to clarify his position, Tharoor stated to news agency ANI, “For 16 years, I have been in politics. My perspective has always been that when the government—be it ours or another party’s—executes something commendable, it is crucial to acknowledge it. Conversely, we should also critique poor actions.”
He emphasized that his article focused on the entrepreneurial progress in Kerala under the current Left administration rather than endorsing the government itself. “There’s still much to accomplish. However, it seems trivial not to recognize positive developments, even in limited areas. My claims were primarily based on the Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2024 and specific data included in my article,” he explained.
Tharoor urged readers to engage with the full article before passing judgment, noting it does not address party politics but outlines the necessary steps for Kerala to overcome its economic challenges—changes he has advocated throughout his political career.
Reports suggest Tharoor feels uncertain about his role in Congress and has been feeling sidelined. A Times of India article cited sources from the All India Congress Committee (AICC) indicating Tharoor’s frustration with Rahul Gandhi’s reluctance to clarify expectations from the party leadership.
Tharoor had a meeting with Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday after receiving criticism from the party’s Kerala unit regarding his article. Despite the surrounding rumours, Tharoor characterized the discussion as “very good” but did not disclose specific details about their conversation, according to PTI.
When questioned about his feelings of being sidelined within the party, Tharoor responded, “I have never made any complaint against anyone.”
