Uttar Pradesh (UP) Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma joined the list of BJP luminaries tracing every modern scientific achievement to ancient myths in what observers and commentators say is a ludicrous attempt to overcome a collective inferiority complex.
As per media reports, the UP Dy CM said, “People say Sita ji was born from an earthen pot, which means at the time of Ramayana, a concept similar to test tube baby must have existed.”
This was not a one-off comment from Sharma. Earlier on Thursday, while linking modern inventions with ancient India, he said that journalism began in the Mahabharata era.
Speaking at an event organised to mark the ‘Hindi Journalism Day’, he also drew a parallel between Narad Muni and search engine giant Google.
Citing various instances from Mahabharata, he said, “It (journalism) started during Mahabharata.” It is another matter that there is n mention of the profession anywhere in any ancient text.
If one would still be willing to let that pass, he added that the mythological character, Sanjaya, sitting at Hastinapur, used live telecast to narrate the war of Mahabharata to Dhritarashtra . “Yeh live telecast nahi to aur kya hai (if it is not live telecast, then what is it ?),” Sharma asked.
He went further. Equating Narada with the present-day Google, the deputy chief minister said, “Your Google has started now, but our Google started a long time back. ‘Narad Muni’ was the epitome of information. He could reach anywhere and transfer a message from one place to another by saying ‘Narayana’ three times.”
Before him, it was Tripura CM Biplab Deb who claimed that internet and satellite communications existed in India thousands of years ago and stuck to it in the face of hilarity it evoked at international level.
Deb also advised mechanical engineers not to go for the civil services as, he said, civil engineers were better suited for the job. “Those who are from a mechanical engineering background should not opt for civil services. Civil engineers have this knowledge,” Deb said.
Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said in a 2014 function in Mumbai that genetic science had existed during the Mahabharata and there was evidence of organ transplant – a total head transplant – in ancient India, citing Ganesha as the example.
