ndian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday, May 16, issued a weather warning forecasting likelihood of thunderstorms lashing large parts of north India, including Delhi-NCR over the next three days.
This follows a dust storm that hit Delhi-NCR area in the early hours of Wednesday, killing one, injuring over a dozen and felling at least 59 trees. The Delhi Police Control Room (PCR) received 78 calls during the storm that started around 3am, said media reports.
According to the warning bulletin for Thursday, “Thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds (with speed 50-70 kms) very likely at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.”
Similar weather conditions are forecast for May 17 at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
Over the past week, thunderstorms and dust storms have wreaked havoc across northern and eastern parts of the country. Reports suggest that the number of casualties could be anywhere between 80 and 100.
Experts have opined that the freak weather phenomenon is due to a western disturbance that originates in the Mediterranean Sea and brings rainfall to northwestern India.
Western disturbance is a normal phenomenon that can be observed over the western Himalayas and north Indian plains from October to March. However, what is unusual is its occurrence in April-May, several senior IMD scientists were reported as saying.
