Shaheed Udham Singh birth anniversary: The freedom fighter who avenged Jallianwala Bagh tragedy| All you need to know

Shaheed Udham Singh, one of India’s most courageous freedom fighters, was born on December 26. Udham Singh, known for avenging the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, was born in Punjab’s Sangrur district in 1899.

On April 13, 1919, when British soldiers under the leadership of General Reginald Dyer, opened fire at unarmed civilians, who were gathered there to take part in a peaceful protest in the Jaliianwala Bagh. Approx 400 people died and more than a thousand got wounded by the bullets of British soldiers. At that time, Udham Singh was just 20 years old and this incident shook him from the core of his heart.

After this massacre by the British soldiers, Udham Singh decided to avenge the innocent lives who died that day and made his mission to kill the main face behind that cruel action, General Reginald Dyer famously known as General Dyer.

The revolutionary freedom fighter assassinated General Dyer in London on March 13, 1940. He shot Gen O’Dyer at a meeting of the East India Association and the Royal Central Asian Society at Craxton Hill. However, after killing O’Dyer, Udham Singh was arrested by the British police, and later on July 31, 1940, he was hanged to death at Pentonville Prison. His last remains were sent back to India in 1974 and then he was cremated in his village Sunam in Punjab’s Sangrur district.

Later in 2021, to honour the legacy of Sardar Udham Singh, Bollywood filmmaker Shoojit Sircar with actor Vicky Kaushal made a biopic on his life titled ‘Sardar Udham’. Through this film, many people got to know more about the whole episode of the Jallianwala Bagh and avenging Gen O’Dyer after 21 years of the massacre.

In 2018, a 10 feet tall statue of Udham Singh was unveiled by then Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at the main entrance of Jallianwala Bagh.
