A deadly cloudburst triggered flash floods in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district early Tuesday, sweeping through Dharali village and neighbouring areas, leaving a trail of destruction and at least four confirmed dead. The disaster was accompanied by landslides in Himachal Pradesh, leading to the shutdown of National Highway 35 near Nigulsari in Kinnaur and the Chandigarh-Shimla highway due to debris in Solan district.
According to officials, the cloudburst occurred at approximately 1:50 am in the catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river. The ensuing flash floods unleashed a torrent of mud, water, and debris, engulfing buildings, trees, and vehicles. Eyewitness videos captured the chaos as massive waves crashed into houses, with screams of panic echoing in the background.
Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya confirmed the deaths of at least four individuals. Rescue teams, however, have not yet confirmed how many may be missing.
The impact of the cloudburst was not limited to Dharali. Another village, Sukki, located on the opposite slope, was also hit by the same surge of water, according to State Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman. A red alert remains in effect across Uttarkashi.
In a worrying development, at least 11 Army personnel are missing from an army camp in Harsil, which was also struck by the cloudburst. Rescue efforts are being led by the Army, NDRF, SDRF, and local police forces. Additional NDRF units from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh were flown in to reinforce the operation.
The Uttarakhand government has issued emergency helpline numbers — 01374222126, 01374222722, and 9456556431 — for people seeking help or information.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh both assured that the central and state governments are working in close coordination. Shah confirmed the deployment of seven additional rescue teams to the affected zone.
Meanwhile, neighbouring Himachal Pradesh is also reeling under the effects of intense rainfall. A bridge over the Tanglig drain in Kinnaur was washed away, and multiple highways have been rendered impassable. NH-35 near Nigulsari and the vital Chandigarh-Shimla highway at Chakki Mor in Solan district were closed due to landslides and falling debris.
The India Meteorological Department defines a cloudburst as rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres per hour across a small area of 20-30 sq. km, accompanied by strong winds and lightning — often causing catastrophic damage in the fragile Himalayan terrain.
