A total of 38 bodies have been recovered, while over 200 people are still missing since a week after the Nanda Devi glacial burst that triggered massive flash floods in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. The rescue operation is still underway at the Tapovan tunnel where over 30 people have been trapped when water and slush entered the tunnel.

The excavation has been done till 136 metres in the tunnel in rescue efforts. The excavators have also reached Raini village, the worst-hit area, where a body was found, said Swati Bhadoria, Chamoli’s District Magistrate. Of 38 recovered bodies, 12 bodies were identified and 26 remain unidentified, added Bhadoria.

Security personnel have been non-stop digging holes at the tunnel in order to find the trapped ones. An effort has been made to widen the hole so that a camera could be inserted into the tunnel to get a clue of their location.

A joint team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and other teams are carrying out the operation.

Following the glacial burst, a lake has formed near Raini village in Joshimath that is blocking the water flow of the Rishiganga river. It has raised concerns among the experts and the locals. The lake is being monitored through satellites, we need to be cautious, but there is nothing to be worried about, said Uttarakhand Chief Minister on Friday.

Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar said that the SDRF team visited the lake, which is formed at a height of 4,200 meters near Raini Village. The water is continuously flowing from the lake, hence it is not in the danger zone, clarified the DGP.

On the other hand, the scientists of the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing found that the glacial lake has begun to release water which reduces chances of its breaching or causing a flash flood, said the State Emergency Operation Centre.

Meanwhile, a 200 feet bailey bridge is being constructed as an alternative mode of communication in the affected area, where several bridges were badly damaged in the wake of the violent floods last week, said RS Rao, Director, Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

A Delhi court on Tuesday granted bail to Shankar Mishra, the man who peed on an elderly woman on an Air India flight from New York to Delhi in November 2022.

Additional Sessions Judge Harjyot Singh Bhalla granted him bail on a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh, reports said. The court reserved its order on Monday and the case was heard in Delhi’s Patiala Court today.

Earlier this month, Mishra was denied bail by a MM court and the court held that his alleged act of relieving himself upon the complainant was utterly disgusting and repulsive and sufficient to outrage the modesty of any woman.

Shankar Mishra was arrested from Bengaluru on January 7 after the Delhi Police filed a case against him over the incident and said it had defamed India on the international stage.

The Delhi Police said they had recorded a statement by the woman sitting next to the complainant, Illa Banerjee who was sitting on 9C. She also sent an email statement to the police, reports said.
