Imagine you are going to a physiotherapist for cervical pain and he asks you to buy a neck or sleeping pillow. The normal neck pillow costs around Rs 250 to Rs 300, and you won’t mind spending this much if you can get relief. But what if you were asked to pay around half a crore just to put your heads on it? Did it blow your mind? Yes, we are talking about the world’s most expensive pillow, and to buy it, many of us may even have to sell our kidneys.
The world’s most expensive pillow has been founded and designed by Dutch cervical specialist-turned-designer, Thijs van der Hilst. The sleep utility has been designed and made after 15 years of hard work. The world’s most expensive pillow costs a whopping Rs 45 lakh. Hilst said this pillow is called The Tailormade Pillow, which he claims to solve all your sleeping woes.
What is so unique in the world’s most expensive pillow?
The pillow has sapphire, gold, and diamond embellishments. It is filled with cotton that comes from a robotic milling machine. This pillow’s zip has four diamonds in it. And with this, sapphire is attached.
Additionally, the inventor of this pillow claims that it will allow those who struggle with insomnia to sleep soundly. However, because of its great cost, someone might find it difficult to fall asleep for fear of it being stolen.
Why did Hilst think of making the world’s most expensive pillow?
Talking about the need for such an expensive pillow, Hilst said, As a cervical expert, I used to advise my patients to purchase a high-quality pillow from a bed store. What kind of pillow is best for which patient, though? Which of the three pillow sizes would work best if there were three options? How big is a man? But what if this man sleeps on his stomach? What if a small woman has a tiny neck, sleeps on a firm mattress, and is petite? Is the three-cushion height size sufficient to accommodate everyone? He asks, adding, The technology is brand new. I created an algorithm to determine the precise size and shape of a pillow for each individual.
How is the world’s most expensive pillow tailormade?
The exact dimensions of the head, shoulders, and neck are measured using a 3D scanner. Then, a high-tech robotic machine is used to mill Dutch memory foam that can adapt to the shape of the head.
Following that, Van der Hilst checks the patient’s upper body measurement and asks about their sleeping habits, particularly whether they like to lie on their side, stomach, or back when they are asleep.
The next step is to do mathematical computations, after which the output is delivered to the designer’s team in Holland. Before a patient may sleep on their Tailormade Pillow, they have to wait for two to five months.
