Nagaland College Students’ Union

The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Chief Secretary J. Alam demanding coaching institutes be registered and monitored in the state. The union pointed out that establishment of coaching institutes is yet to be brought under any competent authority or the education department in Nagaland. However, it acknowledged that establishment of various coaching institutes had contributed to academic growth in the state. The union suggested that these institutes are no less than any other educational institutions and therefore coaching institutes must also come under certain educational regulation or authority of the state. Meanwhile, it asserted the state government to ensure registration and monitor their safe functioning.

Ex-Pan calls for expedite solution

The Ex-Parliamentarian Association of Nagaland (Ex-Pan) have adopted resolutions during a meeting held in Dimapur on August 12 to urge the Government of India (GOI) and the negotiation parties to bring about a solution without delay. The Association urged the negotiators involved in Indo-Naga peace talks to have the agreement expeditiously and also urged the GOI to give the call to the negotiating parties to have the solution without further delay.

Nagaland Covid-19 updates

According to the Health Department, the state on August 12 recorded 80 new Covid positive cases, 82 recoveries and 2 deaths. The total tally of positive cases rise up to 28,955 while total recovery tally stands at 26,183 and further, pushing the death toll to 579. Reportedly, the state present active cases stand at 1,347.

The Indian Army on Wednesday agreed to give access to Nagaland Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine and record statements of the soldiers who were involved in the ambush that went horribly wrong on December 5, which later led to th death of 14 innocent civilians. However, during that operation, a soldier also died when the local villagers retaliated to the army and surrounded the jawans in anger.

As per reports, the state SIT team is likely to examine and record the statements of the 21 Para Special Forces soldiers by the end of this week. However, it is still not clear yet if the soldiers will be questioned by the SIT team or, they will just submit their prepared statements.

Earlier it was reported that the Nagaland SIT team was expanded from eight members to 22 officers to complete the probe as soon as possible, the SIT team includes five Indian Police Services (IPS) officers and the total team has been divided into seven groups.

However, it is still not clear that how the investigation will take place by the state SIT team because Nagaland falls under those states where Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFPSA), which protects the armed forces from persecution without the centre’s permission.

On December 4 late night, a total of 14 civilians were killed by the security forces in Nagaland’s Oting district. After the incident, violent protests against the government and the army erupted across Nagaland with mobs vandalising a camp of the Assam Rifles in Mon district. The security forces released a statement saying that they were misled which led to the cost of the lives of 14 innocent civilians.

Nagaland: Several civilians killed and injured by security forces in firing incident in Mon district, CM Rio announces SIT probe

­Several civilians were gunned down by security forces in Nagaland’s Mon district. At least thirteen civilians have died and several injured by security forces in the firing incident in the Tiru village area in Mon district.

After this incident, tension has been gripped all over Nagaland, the locals have reportedly set two vehicles of security forces on fire. According to multiple reports, a group of people from Oting village, who were returning home in a pick-mini van, were shot down by security forces. The locals said that the villagers went looking for them after they didn’t return to their home for several hours, but after a long search, villagers found their dead bodies in the same van.

After this incident, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio condemned the killings of civilians and assured a high-level SIT probe for the matter and urged everyone for peace.

Giving the details about the tragic incident, the Indian Army on December 5 said that based on information from intelligence, a specific operation was planned to be conducted in the area of Tiru, Monj district in Nagaland. The Indian army regretted the aftermath of this operation and loss of unfortunate lives.

“Based on credible intelligence of likely movement of insurgents, a specific operation was planned to be conducted in the area of Tiru, Mon District, Nagaland. The incident and its aftermath are deeply regretted. The cause of the unfortunate loss of lives is being investigated at the highest level and appropriate action will be taken as per the course of law. The security forces have suffered severe injuries in the incident including one soldier who succumbed to the injuries,” said Army in their statement.

This horrific incident angered the locals who came out to protest, claiming that the youth were innocent and were returning home after their daily work on a nearby coalfield.

On this occasion, L Khumo Khiamniungan, advisor of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Kevisa Kense, IAS, director of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources and Anoop Khinchi, secretary of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources was present there as a special guest.

According to L Khumo Khiamniungan, advisor of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, fishery provides a valuable source of income and employment for many families, and many people are capable of sustaining their families because of it. Hence, he urged fish farmers not to depend on the government for funds to engage in diverse activities. The Advisor, L Khumo Khiamniungan also encouraged people to pursue fishing as a career because it offers a variety of opportunities.

He urged fish farmers to seek technical guidance and assistance from Department officials for improved fish harvesting, and he urged them to collaborate with people of all sorts of society.

Nagaland uses only 11 per cent of its fishing potential

Anoop Khinchi, secretary of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources said that the need of practising fisheries in a sustainable manner was emphasized. He mentioned that fishery and related businesses employ over 2.8 million people in the country.

Khinchi further stated that just around 11 per cent of the State’s fishing potential is being exploited. He also stated that fishery activities might be a significant source of employment for the state. He urged fish farmers to create Fish Farmers’ Organizations and highlighted the value of paddy cum fish farming and decorative fishing.

Kevisa Kense, IAS, director of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, emphasised the importance of increasing inland fishing in the state.
