Mob attacks assistant commissioner of police in Kolkata

A video from Kolkata has been stirring up the internet where a mob can be seen attacking a policeman at the protest rally which was organized in the city by Bharatiya Janata Party. The video shows a mob carrying sticks running after a policeman and hitting him with the sticks as he tries to flee the scene. The policeman was rescued by locals from the area according.

BJP on Tuesday had organized a rally against corruption in parts of the city, and what started as a peaceful protest turned into a horrific state of affairs where people who were protesting were reportedly throwing rocks and causing a ruckus. As it turns out the policeman getting attacked in the video is the assistant commissioner of police in Kolkata. Another video from the rally showed a site where the protestors torched a police vehicle.

However, Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Swapan Dasgupta, told and suggested that those people who attacked the police were not associated with the BJP. Whereas, Union Minister, Subhash Sarkar, pointed a finger at the state police and alleged the police for provoking and attacking the protesters. Sarkar also alleged that stones were hurled at the protestors by the police as well as roads leading to the state secretariat were blocked with barricades which agitated the protestors.

Trinamool Congress has come forward and praised the police on the way they dealt with the situation as Sougata Roy, Trinamool congress leader, recalled how back in 1993 the police took more stringent measures as they opened fire against the protestors which cost the lives of 13 Trinamool workers, implying towards how empathetically the police acted compared to before.

The Trinamool Congress also alleged the BJP workers have thrown stones and bricks at random. They also informed the reporters that these actions by the BJP have injured several policemen including IPS officers. The Trinamool has also claimed that many cars broke down in the attack in the Burrabazar area.

A similar predicament ensued back when India celebrated its 72nd republic day on 26 January, at the red fort, where a policeman was chased after by a mob of protestors during the farmer protest. The BJP branded the protestors with names like anti-nationals and whatnot, the perpetrators were also named in the charge sheet.
