Karnataka Congress MLA H.A. Iqbal Hussain, a close ally of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, claimed on Sunday that Shivakumar could assume the role of Chief Minister within the next two to three months, reigniting speculation about a leadership change in the state.
Speaking to reporters in Ramanagara, Hussain credited Shivakumar’s strategic efforts for the Congress’s 2023 Assembly election victory. “Everyone knows the struggle, sweat, and dedication Shivakumar put into securing this win. His strategies are legendary,” he said, responding to queries about Shivakumar’s prospects for the top post.
“I’m not indulging in speculation. The Congress high command is well aware of the situation and will make an appropriate decision at the right time. I believe Shivakumar will get his chance within two to three months.”
The remarks follow recent comments by Cooperation Minister K.N. Rajanna, who hinted at “revolutionary” political developments in Karnataka after September.
Hussain, however, downplayed the term “revolution,” stating, “Change is routine in politics. Appointing a capable leader suited to today’s needs isn’t a revolution. The high command will decide who takes the responsibility.”
Addressing speculation about a power-sharing deal between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, Hussain recalled the Congress high command’s role in resolving the leadership tussle after the 2023 polls.
“Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge made the decision in Delhi. They will decide the next step too,” he said, dismissing claims by Siddaramaiah’s son, MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah, that talk of a leadership change was mere conjecture.
Hussain refuted suggestions of multiple power centres within the Congress, asserting, “There’s only one power centre—the party high command. The Congress is disciplined, and everyone adheres to its directives.”
He emphasized the party’s stability, noting, “Our government has a clear majority. If another party were toppling us, that might be called a revolution, but no such thing is happening.”
The buzz around a leadership shift stems from unconfirmed reports of a rotational chief minister arrangement following the 2023 elections, when Shivakumar accepted the Deputy CM role amid intense competition with Siddaramaiah.
