The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday questioned former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah in connection with some irregularities in Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) funds. His party has condemned the questioning and linked it with his recent move of bringing all the Jammu and Kashmir parties together in a campaign for restoring special status.

Farooq Abdullah’s son Omar Abdullah said that the questioning is a political vendetta and it is connected to the formation of the People’s Alliance for the Gupkar Declaration. He said that the party will respond to this ED summons shortly. He was referring to the six parties which are forging an alliance to regain the special status of Jammu and Kashmir that was abrogated by the central government on August 5, 2019. A meeting was conducted at Farooq Abdullah’s house in connection with the alliance which was attended by PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, Peoples Movement leader Javaid Mir, Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Lone, Awami National Conference vice-president Muzaffar Shah and Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Lone.

The Enforcement Directorate is looking into a money laundering case connected to the funds of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA). The CBI in 2018 filed a charge sheet against Farooq Abdullah, Mohd Saleem Khan, Mirza, Mir Manzoor Gazanffer Ali, Bashir Ahmad Misgar, and Gulzar Ahmad Beigh (former accountant of JKCA) for alleged misappropriation of Rs. 43.69 crore between 2002-11 and turning the sports body into a lending agency.

The scam was unearthed in March 2012 when JKCA treasurer Manzoor Wazir filed the police complaint against former treasurer Ahsan Mirza and former general secretary Mohammad Saleem Khan. The central agency issued a statement in February this the year that said ED was ordered to attach assets worth Rs. 2.6 crore in money laundering case and the provisional order for attachment of assets was issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against the finance committee member Mir Mansoor Gazanffer and former treasurer of JKCA Ahsan Ahmad Mirza.
