An arrest warrant has been issued against BJP leader Hardik Patel for failing to appear before a court in Gujarat in connection with a 2017 case, barely a week after another court in the state acquitted Patel in a similar case.
Additional chief judicial magistrate D D Shah issued a warrant against Hardik Patel for failing to appear in the court in Surendranagar district in connection with a case where he is accused of violating a government order.
The BJP MLA had delivered a political speech violating a government order at a village in the district ahead of the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections.
The court, through an order dated February 2, has directed the station officer at Dhrangadhra taluka police station in Surendranagar to arrest and produce Patel before the court. An official said the station received the order on February 11, an official confirmed.
Hardik and Kaushik Patel were named in an FIR lodged at Dhrangadhra taluka police station on January 12, 2018 for allegedly violating the conditions of the permission granted to them for organizing a meeting at Haripar village in the district.
According to the FIR, Hardik and Kaushik had sought permission to organize a meeting in the village on November 26, 2017, ahead of assembly elections in the state. The permission was granted; however, the duo allegedly violated a notification issued by the additional district magistrate in a speech delivered during the meeting.

The duo was booked under sections 37 (3) and 135 of the Gujarat (Bombay) Police Act, 1951, dealing with punishment for disobeying government orders.
Notably, a court at Jamnagar had last week acquitted Patel in a similar case for making a political speech in violation of a government order at a rally at Dhutarpar village in November 2017.
Patel, at the time led the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), a Patidar community organisation that organised state-wide agitation demanding reservation under OBC quota for the youths. The agitation had turned violent.
Hardik Patel joined the Congress in 2019 but quit the party ahead of the Gujarat Assembly Elections in December last year. The Patidar leader then contested on a BJP ticket from Ahmedabad’s Viramgam constituency and won. Patel faces more than two dozen cases, including two sedition cases in Gujarat.
