INDIA alliance will hold countrywide programmes on Gandhi Jayanti, says Nitish Kumar

Opposition alliance INDIA will organise countrywide programmes on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, according to  Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Although he did not reveal details about the programme, JD(U) leader, who is also a constituent of INDIA, asserted that a decision has been taken in this regard at the last held meeting in Mumbai.

Speaking on this regard, the Bihar chief minister mentioned that they had taken a resolution that the INDIA alliance will celebrate Gandhi Jayanti across the country. He further claimed that the BJP-led NDA has been rattled by the unity of opposition and therefore the central government has called for a special session in the Parliament.

Nitish Kumar said that the INDIA alliance has rattled the ruling BJP which has forced the Central government to explore the possibility of holding assembly and national elections simultaneously. He continued that the move betrays panic in the BJP after they saw the unity of opposition parties under the INDIA coalition.

The chief minister also questioned why the central government was not discussing the delay in the decadal census. He pointed out that the government has time for all other things but not for the caste survey and census. Nitish Kumar made these statements on the sidelines of a function on the occasion of the birth anniversary of former chief minister Nitish Kumar.

On August 31, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi announced a special session of the Parliament from September 18 – September 22. Speaking on the matter, the chief minister remarked that convening a special session of Parliament indicates that the ruling party are thinking of holding early polls.

He added that during the Parliament special session they will raise crucial issues like caste survey, census and one nation one election. He stated that a resolution has also been taken to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha election together as far as possible and that the seat sharing arrangement will be made at the earliest. Notably, Nitish Kumar led JD(U) has 16 Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.

Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the leading candidate for the West Bengal Chief Minister post as BJP prepares to form its first government in the state. Reports suggest the new cabinet may also include two deputy chief ministers.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the leading contender for the post of Chief Minister in West Bengal as the party prepares to form its first government in the state following its Assembly election victory.

The BJP legislature party is scheduled to meet in Kolkata to elect its leader, a decision that is expected to formally determine the next Chief Minister. Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached Kolkata ahead of the meeting and is overseeing the selection process.

Sources cited in media reports suggest the new BJP-led government may also appoint two deputy chief ministers, a post that has remained vacant in West Bengal for nearly two decades. One of the deputy CM positions could reportedly go to a woman leader. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul is among the names being discussed for the role.

Another deputy chief minister could be chosen from north Bengal, with former Union minister Nisith Pramanik being seen as a possible contender, according to reports. There is also speculation that the BJP leadership may consider a representative from the tribal community for a senior cabinet role.

Adhikari, who played a key role in the BJP’s election campaign, defeated Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur during the recently concluded Assembly elections. The BJP secured a two-thirds majority in the 294-member Assembly, paving the way for its first government in West Bengal.

The swearing-in ceremony for the new government is expected to take place on May 9 in Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several senior BJP leaders are expected to attend the event.

Rat poison found in watermelon consumed by Mumbai family, forensic report reveals

A forensic investigation into the deaths of four members of a Mumbai family has found traces of zinc phosphite, a toxic rat poison, in both the victims’ bodies and watermelon samples consumed by them.

Mumbai police are investigating a suspected poisoning case after forensic tests reportedly confirmed that four members of a family died due to consumption of a toxic rodenticide rather than food poisoning.

The victims — Abdullah Dokadia, his wife Nasreen, and their daughters Zainab and Ayesha — had reportedly consumed watermelon at their residence in Mumbai after hosting relatives for dinner. Within hours, all four developed severe vomiting and diarrhoea before dying.

According to forensic findings, traces of zinc phosphite, a chemical commonly used in rat poison, were found in the bodies of the deceased as well as in samples of the watermelon consumed by the family.

Investigators are now examining whether the poisonous substance entered the fruit accidentally or was intentionally introduced. Authorities are also looking into multiple angles, including accidental contamination and possible foul play.

The case had initially been suspected to be one of food poisoning linked to watermelon consumption. Earlier forensic examinations had reportedly found a green tint in some internal organs, which later raised suspicion of poisoning.

Officials had earlier recorded statements from relatives who attended the family dinner and consumed the same meal but did not fall ill.

Experts say zinc phosphite can be extremely dangerous for humans, as it releases toxic phosphine gas after entering the stomach, potentially causing rapid organ failure.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is preparing to form its first government in West Bengal after its decisive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. The swearing-in ceremony of the new government is scheduled for May 9 in Kolkata, while suspense continues over the party’s Chief Ministerial choice.

According to reports, the BJP legislature party is expected to meet on Friday in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to elect its leader formally. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several senior BJP leaders are likely to attend the oath-taking ceremony.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the frontrunner for the Chief Minister’s post following the BJP’s strong performance in the elections. Other names reportedly under consideration include Samik Bhattacharya, Sukanta Majumdar and Swapan Dasgupta.

The political developments come a day after Governor RN Ravi dissolved the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and state cabinet following the completion of the Assembly election process. The dissolution order was issued under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution after outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declined to submit her resignation despite the Trinamool Congress losing power.

The BJP secured a clear majority in the 294-member Assembly, ending the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule in the state. The election outcome marks a major political shift in West Bengal, where the BJP is set to form a government for the first time.

Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are underway at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground, where senior BJP leaders and party supporters are expected to gather for the event.
