Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA KS Eshwarappa landed in a controversy after he made a remark on Azaan, an Islamic call to public prayer in a mosque, stating that reciting Azaan on loudspeakers gives him a headache.
Addressing a public gathering in Mangaluru, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka said Azaan gives him a headache. The BJP leader then questioned if Allah will listen to prayers only if loudspeakers are used during Azaan. He further said if you have to call for prayers using loudspeakers, it means Allah is deaf.
The use of loudspeakers for the call to prayer has long been the topic of heated dispute with a section of people arguing that Azaan can upset people of other religions.
Further, the senior BJP leader said even Hindus pray in temples, sing shlokas and bhajans, and have more faith than them and it’s Bharat mata that protects religions, but if you say that Allah listens only if you pray with a microphone, he said he must question if he’s deaf, it’s not needed, this issue must be resolved, Eshwarappa added.

His remarks are likely to add fuel to the azaan row which reached the high court last year.
Earlier in July 2005, the Supreme Court banned the use of loudspeakers between 10 pm and 6 am except in public emergency cases, citing the health impacts of noise pollution. Later in 2005, the apex court said loudspeakers could be permitted to be used till midnight on festive occasions for 15 days a year.
This is not the first time Eshwarappa has landed in a soup. Earlier, he sparked controversy when he referred to 18th-century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan as a Muslim gunda.
Eshwarappa was forced to step down as minister last year after he was named in a police case linked to a contractor’s death. The contractor accused him of being solely responsible for his death in the final messages.
