In an election said to be weighed down by 18 years of anti-incumbency, Shivraj Singh Chouhan pulled a rabbit out of his hat and won the party an election in which he was to be trounced. The party is set to win 163 seats, much higher than exit poll highest 140 seats. The Congress is set to win 65 seats in the 230-member Assembly.

The landslide victory comes on the back of Chouhan’s Ladli Behna scheme which seems to have been the game-changer. By voteshare, the BJP got 48.81%, the Congress 40.32%, the Bahujan Samaj Party 3.27% and the Samajwadi Party 0.45%.

ELECTION 2023 COVERAGE: Telangana | Rajasthan | Chhattisgarh

Speaking to TV crews, Chouhan credited the victory to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the success of the double-engine sarkar. The vote is for progress and development for which the party stands, he said. Chouhan shared sweets with Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and BJP state chief VD Sharma at the Bhopal HQ.

Senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya spoke of the gains from Malwa-Nimar, where he has been at work for the last year. He said he was happy to have contributed to the victory.

With PM Modi leading the campaign with a marked anti-incumbency, the campaign Modi ke Mann mein MP, MP ke Mann mein Modi castled the Congress’ welfare promises. With his speech in some 14 rallies in the state, Modi managed to convince voters that the state would continue to have his special focus.

Apart from the Ladli Behna scheme, farmers were also won over with the schemes tailored for them. The beneficiaries of these two categories found their benefits land in the bank recently. The overconfidence of the Congress, which led to their fall, seemed to be an overreliance on its social media reach, particularly its leg of the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Despite having some 12,000 manifesto promises, the Congress gameplan crumbled with workers not able to impress their offer upon voters.
