Telangana Congress chief Revanth Reddy thanked the people of the state for the mandate they gave his party. The party won 64 seats against 39 of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi led by K. Chandrashekhar Rao, which has ruled the state for two full terms.

Addressing a press conference, Reddy credited the victory to the grassroots galvanisation brought by Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra and the campaigning by Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. Reddy said the Congress will fulfil the promises made to the people.

ELECTION 2023 COVERAGE: Madhya Pradesh | Rajasthan | Chhattisgarh

Reddy said he accepted the congratulations offered by BRS leader and KCR’s son KT Rama Rao and said party will take a collaborative approach to policymaking with the BRS. Rama Rao had conceded the BRS defeat and thanked the people of the state for giving the party two consecutive terms in government.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge thanked the people of Telangana for the victory in his reaction to the results pouring in.

The Congress has won Thungathurthi, Nagarjuna Sagar, Munugode, Nizamabad (Rural), Miryalaguda, Chennur, Bellampalli, Jukkal, Ramagundam, Medak, Andole and Huzurnagar.

The BRS, formerly the Telangana Rashtriya Samiti, had changed its first initial in its plans to go national as a non-BJP, non-Congress formation. It failed to make headway despite contesting the Karnataka assembly elections in regions neighbouring Telangana. Efforts to forge a greater coalition of regional parties have also run into rough weather with this turn of events but the BRS with deep pockets can still manage a surprise in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The plans to forge the front had failed on account of the Congress win in Karnataka which unseated the Basavaraj Bommai BJP government. With other regional parties either with the BJP or the Congress, like the Janata Dal Secular and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam respectively, the regional presence in the South ends up rather limited.

KT Rama Rao’s comments on X today said he was disappointed and not saddened. Now it is for the BRS to focus on Telangana or a bigger national effort without being held down by administering a state.
