West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said she was unaware of the incident in which seven judicial officers were allegedly held hostage overnight in Malda district, adding that the state administration was no longer under her control due to the Election Commission’s intervention ahead of the Assembly elections.

Addressing a poll rally in Murshidabad, the Trinamool Congress chief said she first learned about the incident from a journalist late at night. “I don’t know who is responsible… no one informed me,” she said, expressing concern over what she described as a breakdown in communication within the administration.

Banerjee alleged that the Election Commission had taken over key administrative powers following recent changes in state officials. “The administration is not in my hand. The Election Commission is controlling law and order… they listen to Home Minister Amit Shah. Everyone has been changed… my powers have been transferred. It is ‘super President’s rule’,” she said.

‘Failure to maintain law and order,’ says Banerjee

The chief minister also criticised the Election Commission for what she termed a failure to maintain law and order during the election period. “All my powers have been taken away. I have never seen such an Election Commission,” she remarked.

The incident involved seven judicial officers, including three women, who were reportedly detained by a group of voters. The mob was said to be protesting after their names were removed from the electoral roll ahead of the two-phase Assembly elections scheduled this month.

Electoral roll revision sparks controversy

The electoral roll revision, carried out under the Election Commission’s directive, has triggered political tensions in the state. The Special Intensive Revision exercise has been strongly opposed by the ruling Trinamool Congress and other opposition parties, who allege that it is aimed at removing certain sections of voters.

Banerjee, while acknowledging public anger over the issue, said she could understand the frustration among those affected by the voter list changes.
