Nandigram accident: EC removes Mamata Banerjee’s security-in-charge, suspends SP, transfers DM over poor security arrangements
In the wake of accidental injury to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during Nandigram rally, the Election Commission of India on Sunday ordered the removal and suspension of the West Bengal director of security Vivek Sahay

In the wake of accidental injury to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during Nandigram rally, the Election Commission of India on Sunday ordered the removal and suspension of the West Bengal director of security Vivek Sahay, the suspension of Purba Medinipur SP Pravin Prakash and transferred District Magistrate Vibhu Goel for poor security arrangements.
The decision was taken on the basis of reports submitted by the state’s Chief Secretary and its own special poll observers that pointed to non-adherence of laid down security protocols for Banerjee’s Z+ security.
Sahay was the security-in-charge of Banerjee when she suffered an accident during her campaign in Nandigram Assembly constituency on Wednesday evening. Banerjee sustained severe bone injuries on her left foot and ankle during the accident, following which she was rushed to the hospital. The Chief Minister was discharged from the hospital on Friday.
The election body has decided that charges must be framed against Sahay within a week for grossly failing in discharge of his primary duty as Director Security to protest the Z+ protectee. Chief Secretary, in consultation with DGP, is authorised to post suitable Director Security immediately following the extant procedure. Posting order may be communicated to the Commission latest by 1 p.m. on March 15, the EC said in a statement.
The Election Commission has asked the Chief Secretary and DGP to post a suitable successor to Sahay within a week. They have also been asked to identify the other proximate security personnel below Sahay, who failed in their duties to prevent the incident.

Meanwhile, in place of Vibhu Goel, Smita Pandey has been posted as District Magistrate and DEO, Purba Medinipur with immediate effect. Sunil Kumar Yadav has been posted as SP Purba Medinipur in place of SP Pravin Prakash.
