No hate speech at Delhi Dharam Sansad, Delhi Police tells Supreme Court

After conducting an in-depth investigation into the video clips of the speeches made by Sudarshan TV anchor Suresh Chavhanke and several others, the Delhi Police found that no words against any particular community were used.

The Delhi Police on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that there was no anti-Muslim hate speech by the Hindu right-wing leaders at the Delhi Dharam Sansad organized by the Hindu Yuva Vahini in Delhi last year in December.

After conducting an in-depth investigation into the video clips of the speeches made by Sudarshan TV anchor Suresh Chavhanke and others, the Delhi Police found that no words against any particular community were used. On the basis of the investigation, all the complaints filed regarding the event are closed, the police said.

In its affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, the Delhi Police also questioned the petitioners for moving to the top court without first approaching the police.

In its counter-affidavit filed in response to a PIL seeking action against the speakers at the Haridwar Dharam Sansad and the Hindu Yuva Vahini event, the Delhi Police said an in-depth investigation of the video and other material found that no hate speech was given against any community. The alleged speech contained no hate speech against a particular community, the Delhi Police told the Supreme Court.

Referring to Supreme Court orders on Freedom of Expression, the Delhi Police said that the petitioner is trying to draw an incorrect and absurd inference by isolated passages disregarding the main theme and the message of the Dharam Sansad.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had directed the Uttarakhand government, the Central government, and the Delhi Police to respond to a plea in the Dharma Sansad hate speech case on January 12.

The plea filed by Justice Anjana Prakash, a former judge of the Patna High Court, and journalist Qurban Ali stated that between December 17 and 19, 2021, at two separate events organized in Delhi (by the Hindu Yuva Vahini) and Haridwar (by Yati Narsinghanand), hate speeches were made, consisting of open calls for genocide of Muslims in order to achieve ethnic cleansing.

K M Cherian, eminent Indian cardiac surgeon, passes away

Dr. K.M. Cherian, a towering figure in Indian medical history and a renowned cardiac surgeon, passed away on Saturday night in Bengaluru at the age of 82. His sudden death cast a pall over the nation, leaving a void in the field of cardiology and beyond. He had travelled to Bengaluru to attend a wedding when he unexpectedly collapsed.

His daughter, Sandhya Cherian, confirmed the tragic news, stating that he was rushed to Manipal Hospitals, where he was pronounced dead at 11:55 pm. The medical community mourns the loss of a true giant, a pioneer whose contributions reshaped the landscape of cardiac surgery in India.

Dr. Cherian’s legacy extends far beyond his impressive list of accomplishments. His pioneering spirit led him to achieve what was once considered impossible in India. In 1975, he etched his name into the annals of medical history by becoming the first surgeon in the country to successfully perform a coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG).
