Parliament building inauguration row: FM Nirmala Sitharaman urges opposition parties to attend the event

Amid the fight between opposition and Centre over the inauguration of newly built Parliament building, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday, appealed the opposition parties to change their opinion and attend the inaugural event on May 28.

Sitharaman addressing a event in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai said the Parliament is a temple of Democracy and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped inside bowing on the stairs of the parliament.

Sitharaman further requested and made an appeal to the  opposition parties to give a second thought on their decision to boycott the event, change their stand and requested to mark their presence in the inauguration of the newly constructed Parliament building.

This comes just a day after the decision of opposition parties to boycott the event expressing their dissatisfaction.

The newly constructed Parliament building is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28 Sunday.

The decision of the inauguration by PM Modi has stirred a controversy between the opposition and the Centre.

Opposition parties are raising objection over the decision and demanding that the inauguration should be done by the hands of President Droupadi Murmu and not by Prime Minister Modi.

Yesterday, a total of 19 like-minded opposition parties issued a joint statement informing about their decision to avoid the inauguration ceremony.

The list of opposition parties include Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, National Congress Party, Aam Aadmi Party, Janata Dal (United), Communist Party and many others.

The opposition parties in their statement termed the decision of the inauguration by PM Modi as a grave insult to the Constitution and alleged that the BJP is trying to sideline the President.

To this the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) also issued a statement launching a sharp counter attack on the opposition parties decision.

Meanwhile Odisha’s Biju Janata Dal and Andhra Pradesh’s YSRCP have decided to attend the event.

Bihar BJP chief Samrat Choudhary compares Congress leader Rahul Gandhi  with Osama Bin Laden, says one cannot become the PM just by growing beard

BJP’s Bihar unit chief Samrat Chaudhary was addressing a public rally in Bihar’s Araria district when he compared Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with slain terrorist former Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden and said Rahul Gandhi cannot become the Prime Minister of the India just by growing a beard.

Choudhary’s comments came months after former Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during his Bharat Jodo Yatra sported a beard. The BJP leader also slammed Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar that he is going around the country telling everyone that he is the Prime Minister of the country. He said Kumar has lost his mental balance.

He commented on the opposition’s inability to select a Prime Ministerial candidate for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. He said kumar’s mental state resembled the character of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan in the film Ghajini. A meting of opposition parties is going to take place in Patna to chalk out a strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and fight united against the BJP.

A range of senior opposition leaders like Sharad Pawar, Mallikarjun Kharge, Mamata Banerjee, Rahul Gandhi and others are going to be a part of the meeting.

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma had made similar comments on Rahul Gandhi’s look. He had made a comparison of Gandhi with Saddam Hussein and advised him to shave his beard so that he could look like former Indian PM Jawaharlal Nehru. Meanwhile Choudhary said, if BJP government is formed in Bihar action will be taken against those involved in cow slaughter. Continuing on his remarks on Gandhi Choudhary said Gandhi is a child and even questioned his political acumen.

He said although Rahul is 50 years old he lacks the political intelligence comparing him with a child having intellectual capacity of a child. Choudhary even addressed the issue of love Jihad. He said, if BJP government comes to power in Bihar, love jihadists will be identified and prosecuted.

He said, the BJP stressed on identifying and deporting Bangladeshi infiltrators from across the border.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar explained his decision to appoint two working president for the party. He elaborated that the decision was to ensure that the NCP’s leadership team has enough hands to associate with the party’s affairs across the country.


In a press conference, Sharad Pawar points out that the situation in the country is such that it would have been wrong to give the responsibility of all states to only one person. Commenting on the decision to appoint Patel and Sule overseeing Ajit Pawar, Sharad Pawar claimed that his nephew already handles multiple responsibilities and that he won’t be unhappy with the decision.


Ajit Pawar who was seen visibly upset with the announcement, is currently the leader of opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly. In 2019, Ajit Pawar associated with the BJP and took oath as Deputy Chief Minister with Devendra Fadnavis as the Chief Minister.


Meanwhile, Praful Patel who is surprised by the decision expressed that he will continue to work hard for the party and will ensure to increase the footprint of the party. He further added that he have been working with Pawar since 1999. As per reports, Praful Patel was also made NCP’s in-charge of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Goa and Rajya Sabha while Supriya Sule was made NCP’s in-charge in Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab and issues pertaining to women, youth, students and Lok Sabha.


Supriya Sule also expressed gratitude to NCP chief Sharad Pawar, senior leaders, party workers, party colleagues and other well-wishers of the Nationalist Congress Party for bestowing this responsibility of working president along with Praful Patel.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was surprised in his US visit, when he received a special gift from an artist portraying his mother Sonia Gandhi.

Sarita Pandey who is also a media and communications professional and an artist said on twitter that she gifted Gandhi a charcoal and watercolor painting of former Congress President Sonia Gandhi. It was an emotional moment for Rahul as Pandey handed over the painting him. She said it was a gift from one mother to another mother. Gandhi responded to the tweet, saying that he will pass on the painting to his mother.

On Twitter, users commented, where one user said the painting was lovely. Another said it was a beautiful painting with a beautiful message. The users seem unstoppable in praising the artistic talent of Pandey. Another user applauded her thought behind the painting.

Meanwhile Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the US has got mixed reactions of skepticism, curiosity  and excitement. During his three city US tour his reactions and public appearances have made headlines. He attacked the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) for using all its strength to stop the Bharat Jodo Yatra – a 4000 km long unity march he led across the nation over the course of five months.

He accused the BJP government of using the central agencies in weakening the health of democracy in the country. He said the Central government was attacking the democratic institutions of the nation in a planned systematic way.

The Congress leader during the 10 days of his visit to the United States, which started in the end of last month, delivered his address in the Washington Press Club, Stanford University, a public event among others. The leader also interacted with business leaders, experts in various fields, politicians and others.
