Launching yet another searing assault on the Gandhi family, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Thursday, questioned why the Gandhis shy away from using the Nehru surname after India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Speaking in reply to Motion of Thanks on President Droupadi Murmu’s address in Rajya Sabha, PM Modi asked why the Congress gets upset when they (BJP) sometimes miss mentioning Nehru anywhere while none of them even use his surname.

In a direct jibe at the Gandhi family, the PM asked why they (Gandhis) are “ashamed” and shy away from using the Nehru name when he (Nehru) was such a great man.

The Prime Minister roared that the country is not the property of any family and belongs to the people of India, amid loud chants from the opposition demanding probe into the Adani controversy.

PM Modi also targeted the Congress and its prime ministers, accusing the grand-old party of brushing aside its own mountain of controversies and scandals.

He said that they (Congress) accuse the BJP regime of troubling states while the Congress itself has toppled elected state governments 90 times, adding that former Congress Prime Minister Indira Gandhi used Article 356 fifty times to sack elected state governments.

Jawaharlal Nehru is the great maternal grandfather of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The Gandhi’s take their surname after their paternal great grandfather Feroze Gandhi.

On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi, while participating in a debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address in Lok Sabha, claimed that Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani’s fortunes skyrocketed after the BJP came to power in 2014 and he rose from the 609th to the second spot in the global rich list.

Earlier, in another scathing attack on the Congress the PM Modi said that the BJP practices “true secularism” which ensures that common man becomes the primary beneficiary of the central government’s schemes.

Speaking in reply to Motion of Thanks on President Droupadi Murmu’s address in Rajya Sabha, PM Modi in a clear dig at the opposition, asserted that the lotus (BJP’s symbol) will bloom “no matter how much you sling at us.”

The alleged land grabbing and sexual harassment case in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal has triggered a major political battle among the ruling Trinamool Congress party and the opposition. BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday claimed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is hiding something in the matter and is protecting Shahjahan Sheikh and his allies.

The BJP leader said that Mamata Banerjee is risking the honour of women in Bengal in order to save her political reputation. Questioning why parties like CPI(M) and Congress are  silent on the issue, Ravi Shankar Prasad said that he heard that a woman leader of CPM visited the area but has not opposed the incident or made a public comment. He remarked that Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is also silent on the issue.

Since last week, several women in the district have been protesting against TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh who is allegedly the mastermind behind the incident. Though the West Bengal police have arrested two TMC leaders, Shahjahan Sheikh is still absconding. The BJP leaders in the state claimed that the police administration has become the party office of the ruling party.

Meanwhile, State BJP president Sukanta Mazumdar on Monday, said that the party would hold a 72-hour long protest in the coming days demanding the arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan amid the turmoil in West Bengal over the Sandeshkhali violence. He added that the probable day of protest is February 22.

Slamming Mamata Banerjee for accusing BJP of instigating violence in the state, the BJP president said that the Chief Minister should be a little more sensitive towards the women in the state and refrain from making such statements. He added that the Trinamool Congress party was in a complete denial mode of any violence in the state initially.

Reportedly, West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali area has been witnessing massive unrest for more than 10 days as women protestors are seeking justice against alleged atrocities committed by TMC leader Sheikh Shajahan and his aides.
